Quick Compost????
I have too much garden to make enough compost to make MM to go into the beds. Getting bought stuff is no problem, but in the book and all the posts, etc, the homemade from scraps, leaves, grass, etc., is the best. Consequently, I need it now, and I used up all that I made, so I was wondering if I shredded up leaves until they almost look like dirt, will that do, or do they need to decompose first. If this is not good, what is the best type similar to the leaves, etc., to add to the rest of the mix? According to the book the bought compost from the stores are not very good.

Your leaves will need to decompose first whether your leaves are big or small
If you chop them up, they will however decompose quicker. Lol, you know what's coming next...plan ahead. I know it's easier said than done sometimes, but try to have compost readily available. While making your own compost is almost always going to be better, if you look around, you can find some pretty good composts out there.

Re: Quick Compost????
You can't imagine how much compost I need. I used up all the compost that I made from last year, and it only scracthed the surface. I have about two acres of flower beds, vegie beds, etc and just can't come up with enough compost. That is why I need to find more. I do try to T

Re: Quick Compost????
Craigslist is where I would go to find homemade finished compost that you can use right now. I often see people selling composted stable muckings - you'll be able to see when you get there if the stuff really is finished compost. Or if anybody is selling rabbit poo it doesn't need to be composted first.
Good luck!
Good luck!

Re: Quick Compost????
Good point on resources gwennifer
But yes, planning ahead is going to be key! I don't have the book in front of me, so I can't look it up, but Mel does have a part in there where using sfg method is no longer a viable option if I'm not mistaken. At some point you are no longer gardening, but farming. Like I said, I don't have the book with me so maybe someone who does can chime in with where that break off point is. I guess either way, it's going to be up to you whether you have the resources available to supply your endeavor.

You can find good composts out there. Just remember, you'll need five different types for a well rounded, complete Mel's Mix.

Mr Rooster How do you copy the part and post where I asked and it appears in a frame. By the way I try to use at least five different composts. Maybe six if I can. I use rabbit, chicken, cow, Mushroom when I can get it, homemade, from grass, leaves and house scraps, and horse, when I can get it. Mix all that, then a third of that, vermicilite, and peat moss.

Like this?
See the green quote button on your or any post? Just hit that and it will add it automatically. There are other ways to do it as well, but that's the simplest way.

Re: Quick Compost????
I believe in the Compost 101 thread Plantoid has posted a link for making quick compost.
If you have many many dried leaves and you can chop them up, you can accelerate the composting process and have usable compost in about 28 days.

I couldn't find the link from Plantoid but there is a video on YouTube for Quick Compost, from Ali's Organics. She admits it is not as pretty as traditional compost, but if you are in a real pinch, this could be an option.
