Getting rid of past canned goods
Happy Thanksgiving!
I'm trying to watch the parade, in between the 'many commercials'
I decided to clean the cupboard, making room for the canned goods from this yr. Some things have changed colors, and most are dated from '09. I'm not going to eat this stuff. My question, can some of it go in the compost, or should it just go in the trash?
b & b pickles--trash?
jellies-strawberry, orange marm., apple
peaches, canned in juice, just look bad.
Applesauce and a. butter--looks fine, but how long can these be kept and still be good to eat?
Maybe this should be under compost?

I compost in the pile all my old canned goods, including pickles.

Just make sure you don't put some of them on the worms. e.g. pepper.llama momma wrote:Old spices can be composted too.
Re: Getting rid of past canned goods
I was assuming that the question was in regards to a compost pile and not a worm farm. In regards to the worm farm, I would not put pickles in there.

Thanks all,
No way would I put this stuff on my little angels. They get the peels, etc. may be frozen first, but.
I hardly ever throw anything away anymore. I look at things and I see 'could I compost that or use in my garden'

Just a little joke, camprn. I doubt anyone would put stuff like that in their wormbins.camprn wrote:I was assuming that the question was in regards to a compost pile and not a worm farm. In regards to the worm farm, I would not put pickles in there.

Jo hubby and i were just talking about the same thing last night....we look at everything now in a differnt way too....most of what we use to throw into the garbage can is now for the worms, compost pile, dogs, wood stove or recyled.....we went from 2 large garbage cans full to the rim.... down to 1 garbage can sometimes only half full
i know this will sound gross but we cooked up a bunch of beef and i wanted to save the broth to make soup with it....so we put the juice in the frig over night so that the fat would harden on top.....the next morning when we took out the bowel with the juice...and lifted off a thick layer of harden lard...my first thought was....this is the fixin to make soap never made soap but i have watched video's on it.....

You'll have every dog , cat and coyote in the region after you if you make and use soap made from meat fat

Re: Getting rid of past canned goods
I know soap is made with fats, and cannot see how we are getting clean!
Speaking of animals after you, I once had a cheap pair of fuzzy houseshoes, supposedly made of fake fur. All the dogs, including my own, would growl at me and bite at my houseshoes. I concluded they were probably made of rabbit, maybe. I had to get rid of them.

Beef fat can be used to make soap:
http://www.ehow.com/how_7697409_make-soap-beef-fat.html
By the time it is made into soap there is no meat smell.
I just happened to have attended a class on soap making this week We made goat milk soap with a much easier recipe that uses Cisco, and various vegetable oils along with the lye and goat milk.

*If you look on the label of most any commercially available soap today, you'll see "Sodium Tallowate" listed as an ingredient. Sodium Tallowate is the byproduct of mixing lye with tallow or beef fat. (Technically, tallow is fat (beef or other) that has been rendered.)Yup...the #1 ingredient used in most soaps is beef fat.*

speaking of cats......when i was watching a you tube video on making soap....she (Debs) was taking the hot tallow (beef fat) out side to cool down and she had what seemed like all the cats in the neighborhood on her back porch......
she has 5 part video's from start to finish on how to make soap...excellent teacher and very funny!
this is part 2 Clarifying the Tallow ....at 5:14 mark here comes the cats

I am never surprised what people actually will ask if they should do. Sometimes I see a post that must be a joke but turns out to be a real post that pails common sence. It's like,"Really are you serious?"Kelejan wrote:Just a little joke, camprn. Meatburner, I know what you mean, but at the least they asked a question. Knowledge isn't common until everyone is in the know...... I know I ask questions sometimes that people wonder why I ask...... usually it is because I want to know the answer, on occasion it is purely rhetorical.meatburner wrote:I am never surprised what people actually will ask if they should do. Rose, thanks for this link! I only got to see 1 & 2 coz I can't find the rest, being YouTube challenged and all. But how fun & easy is that! She's so clear even *I* could do it. And the cats sticking their nose and paw into her business IS very funny.

concerned about "stuff" being added to compost
From your replies, it seems that vinegar, salt, and sugar can be added to compost piles without harm to the decomposers.
Do you water the compost after adding pickles and jellies, jams, etc.? How often do you add extra preserved OLD stuff?

Re: Getting rid of past canned goods
If I have a bunch of old canned goods that need disposal or I want the jars for something else, all that preserved food goes right in the compost pile at the same time. But I am not pouring 5 gallon buckets of stuff out. I don't trouble myself too much about sugar and acid, it will all rot eventually.Judy McConnell wrote:From your replies, it seems that vinegar, salt, and sugar can be added to compost piles without harm to the decomposers.

No worries, just dump it in the bin and get back to what you were doing... that is my recommendation.
