Onion sets, garlic, seed potatoes
Hi, I'm new here. I have been looking around the central valley suppliers for some onion sets, garlic, and seed potatoes. Am I too early? I thought (because of the mild temps) I could plant these through the winter. Where can I find these around the Modesto area? (I currently have a garden in the Modesto area, even though I live in Groveland)

Re: Onion sets, garlic, seed potatoes
Greetings and
to the SFG Forum! I have never gardened in your area, but because of the general mildness of the climate year round, my thought is that you could plant your onions from seed then transplant them when they get a bit larger. They are quite long growing so you probably wont have onions until next year. There are several mail order companies you can get garlic from, but this time of year you have to be very quick and not fussy, a lot of the seed stock has already sold out. Try these guys

There are many threads about garlic, use the search feature at the bottom of the latest topics list to find some.
I think potatoes like it warmer, but I am not sure about your area.

Re: Onion sets, garlic, seed potatoes
Not knowing the area, I'd hit the 10:30 Getting Your Garden Ready for Fall Planting discussion at Morris Nursery this coming Saturday 9/22.
It's probably 30 minutes to an hour and a chance to talk to others planning fall gardens, confirm plans and get sources for plants.
Most important is getting a local planting schedule that works. I know in SoCal, potatoes are more a Dec/Jan thing.
I'd say come on down to the Southern California and Inland Valley regional part of this forum. You can match your climate up via Sunset magazine and compare it to the area's in SoCal.
