Post  efirvin 8/9/2012, 2:45 pm

Got back from 17 days of camping and the garden was growing well. Sure helps to have that drip system in.
My zucchini, yellow squash and acorn all had blooms but not much fruit. So out came the Anise Oil to attract the bees! Don't remember when I learned it from but it works. Just place a small cup filled with water and add a few drops of anise oil and place the cups around your flowering plants. I use the tops off of my liquid laundry detergent and they work well.

And why aren't my green beans putting out beans? The plants are 6ft tall but aren't producing. I did add some phosphate fertilizer just to the beans in hopes of getting something. We will see.

Dug up 3 squares of potatoes and got a nice amount! Will dig up the remaining 9 squares as we need them. I think the potatoes will be ok to leave them in the MM. Thats ok right?

Have eaten 2 ripe Early Goliath tomatoes and they were great. Also picked some green ones and made fried green tomatoes. Husband liked those too.
Lettuces are about done. Peas has mostly dried up. I will have to remember to plant them in a more shady spot next time.
Will plant more spinach this week end and maybe more beets.

Hope all is well and eating yummy garden product!

I agree with you on the pole beans. I have teeny beans on my 6 ft vines, but nothing seems to be maturing. I've got everything powdered for blight, so maybe I'm just fighting disease. OH well, there's always next year right? Shocked

Maybe it's just that kind of year. My beans are being slow as well.

One of my zucchini is PM history. The other one is still producing but so slowly. I think it's too busy fighting PM to put much energy into fruit. Got nada on my spag squash, watermelon & cantaloupe except female flowers.

BUT...the beans are doing great if 10 - 15 a day is considered great. I have 5 bush beans altogether and 2 of them are constantly loaded. The other 3 were planted later and I hope will be producing soon.

The 6 pole beans planted behind the bush beans are producing all over the place. They ran out of trellis up top and are now climbing all over each other in a big tangly ball up there, with beans sticking out all around it. But I have to say that they didn't produce until they were close to the top of the trellis.

So there's hope yet for your beans, efirvin.

I don't know why you're not getting beans. that's the one thing we do seem to be getting. I planted it in with the corn, it outgrew the corn, reached over the tops and is latching on to anything in sight! It's actually pulling my corn over!! Getting a fair amount of beans too!

I had never grow poles before and they reached the top of my trellis with just a few beans but in less than two weeks I have more than I can keep up with.

Give them a few more weeks and you may be pleasantly suprised...

my early Contender bush beans did great, however the Blue Lake bush beans were a bit later and the bean pods fry in the heat before maturing (only an inch long). Pole beans are over 6' tall with only a single bloom. Maybe the cooler weather will get them going.

My pole beans are the last hope I have left, the deer ate my bush beans to nubs. But I am worried because they are only 12 inches tall, I waited to plant them when the corn was 4 inches tall and I think the corn is taking over...

No they haven't bloomed any at all yet. And they are well over 6ft tall. Maybe they will all come in at once. I hope to make dill pickled green beans this year (so the husband will eat another type veggie!)

OK then, no worries. no beans because of no blooms is normal. When did you plant them? And what kind are they.

Sure, i don't see why not, since they are going to be pickles. the pepper should probably be cut, but I don't know that you would want to put an entire pepper in a pint, unless you like 'em really, really spicy.

Thanks for the recipe for the spicy beans. Do you have to blanch the beans first or just cut them up and put them in jars?

You want raw beans, washed and full length, cut them if they are too long. Pack the beans as tight a you can.

I planted them 5/12 and kept them under plastic covers for a month but they still seemed to be slow to start.

They are Blue Lake heirloom pole beans and it says 60 to harvest.

Not sure, but if you can get it at a local farm stand or the farmer's market fresh that's ideal. Maybe Rowena knows how much dried seed. Or you can look at other recipes to get an idea.
