I'm totally perplexed!

I have a couple of problems in my new SFG. One is that something is eating the little seedlings. As soon as the first plant got eaten I made a cover for it that totally encompasses the garden.



I only have the cover off long enough to water and it remains completely covered the rest of the time. Yet I continue to find eaten leaves even with the cover on. I have checked under the leaves and even moved a little soil around to see if I could find anything and haven't found a single bug. I have a few pictures here. The white stuff on the spaghetti squash is an organic powder which didn't stop the problem. Anyone have any ideas?

The second problem I'm having is with my Green Beans. I don't know what's wrong with them. Notice the curling of the leaf on this one.

I think you're dealing with slugs and/or snails. They're the only pest I've seen that's able to get in and around every kind of barrier I've made, and they're the most damaging critters too. Do you ever find silvery residue on the leaves in the morning?

Just to see if it's them or not, try this. Go out to the garden either late at night or very early in the morning (before the sun's out), and shine a flashlight on your plants. Do you see slugs or snails anywhere? Or any other bug? If it's slugs/snails, the best way to get rid of them is... hand picking, unfortunately. I've tried everything I can think of, but hand picking is still the only way that really cuts down their numbers in my garden.

I know what you mean about the baby seedlings disappearing as soon as they pop up. The slugs in my garden (we don't have snails, as far as I can tell) aren't so bad in the spring, but come midsummer or fall, I have a VERY hard time sprouting plants for a fall garden

I've never seen snails or slugs here; too hot I would think. But I will plan a late night raid; see if anything pops up.

You'd be surprised! I have a friend who lives in Albuquerque NM and even SHE has snails! (But she likes them, for some strange reason.)

The second picture of your beans with the squiggly line looks like a post I saw a few days ago and was caused by leaf miners. As fol slugs I have never had a slug problem but have read lots of solutions for them so I can give you a few more ideas to try. Try laying a flat board on top of your MM the slugs will go underneath to hide from the heat of the day, lift it up in the afternoon and pick them out. Also beer traps, fill a small bowl with beer and press it down into your MM and they will crawl in and drown. Good luck!

I agree probably slugs. A simple slug trap: lay a few short wooden planks, shingles, whatever you have, right on the of the soil. In the morning check the underside for slugs and snails. If you find them drop them into a cup of soapy water.

What about lizards? I just went out to shade some of my other plants and saw a little lizard running away. If so what do you do about them? They're all over the place.

I think lizards eat live food, like bugs.

Lizzards are your garden friends - eating garden pests.

What about the plants that looked like they're diseased or burnt or something?

The consensus on that thread was that the leaves had sun damage.

Although, when I looked at it again, I noticed the one leaf is turning a little yellow. That might be a sign that your beans have common blight. Watch them carefully and avoid touching them and then touching other plants. Try googling common blight on green beans to see what it looks like so you can catch it early.

It looks like my plants when I had earwigs and sowbugs. Those suckers do a lot of damage! There is an organic killer called Sluggo Plus. It kills slugs, snails, earwigs and sowbugs. Then it turns into an organic fertilizer once it dissipates. I've had really good luck with it so far. I would totally go out at night and see who's partying in your garden, it's amazing what goes on at night! Let us know what you find....
