I am new to SFG, but not gardening in Alaska, maybe a little rusty with it, as I have been an apartment dweller for the last 20 years or so, but we have our own house now and have started a SFG this year. I am in interior Alaska, zone 1. I look forward to talking with others about SFG

Welcome. I hope you have read the ALL NEW SQUAREFOOT GARDENING book. It is the how to manual for this forum. Zone 1 has got to me a challenge.
Gotta ask. Do you get many Santa jokes about living in North Pole?
Kay

I have read and am re reading The All New Square Foot Gardening book.

We don't get many jokes about living in North Pole, but we are a Santa themed town. In the main town are the light posts are all striped like candy canes, our main street is Santa Claus Lane, and the likes. Most of the stores and restaurants play Christmas music mixed in with other music the whole year. It is certainly different living here.

Welcome. I have no added thoughts as I live in SC, but my husband is up near there at Eielson AFB doing a training exercise for three weeks. He says the whole sun never going down totally messes with his head lol.

Eielson is only about 15 minutes from my house. And the sun not going down does take some getting used too.

I have lived up here since 1969, I was a little girl when we moved here. I was raised a 100 miles south of where I live now. Growing up we didn't have electricity or running water, we used an old fashioned hand pump for our water, we had a huge garden and had to haul it that way.

Hello tananarose! I'm so glad you've joined us here - we had another member say hello from Alaska once last year but then never wrote in again. I would love it if you would keep us posted on what you're growing and how it goes. I was raised in Anchorage, so I'm a little familiar with the land of the midnight sun, but not to the degree you are! Both sets of grandparents, also in Anchorage, always had gardens every year. Cool weather crops do magnificently there with all the extra sunshine - I visited for my brothers wedding in July 2010 and my grandma had a whole row of cabbage with massive heads.

Join us in the PNW forum with updates on your new garden! We'd love to hear from you.

Smile

Wecome to the forum from Maine which is cold enough and snowy enough for me these days.

I understand those long days in the summer help provide large crops. Hope to see how your garden is doing there as the months proceed. Please post pics.

Welcome, Tananarose. I look forward to your posts, having lived in both Anchorage and Fairbanks years ago. From what my family still in Fairbanks says, if you're gardening outside, your main problem will probably be keeping moose out of the garden. Bet you'll be getting some award-winning cabbages, though. Best of luck, and keep us informed. Nonna

Thanks for the welcomes. Yes the long days do provide for bigger crops.
I won't be growing cabbage, since I am allergic to it. I had a moose wander thru our yard last week, so far he left the garden alone. IF it seems that they like it, I will put some wire fencing over it and that will keep them out.
