Hello from Alaska! Empty Hello from Alaska!

Post  jhouser 4/30/2011, 2:16 pm

I am trained in Biodynamic Organic farming and have moved from Colorado to Alaska to settle down and start my own farm. I am currently WWOOFing at a hunting lodge near Cantwell, Alaska to get a handle on how to deal with the extended sun hours and the climate.

I've spent most of my life with summer gardens and love doing it but after spending a year working full time on a farm, I realized how much I want to base my life on cultivation. I have also studied homeopathic medicine for 5 years and enjoy growing plants and herbs to process into medicinal tinctures. Learning how to make cough syrup out of elderberries was when I realized I had found something I was truly passionate about.

Hello jhouser:

Your situation sounds very interesting have to cope with the extended daylight hours.

Naturally you do realise tht you will also have extended night hours. lol. We all get an average of 12 hours of each daily. I wonder what the best mix is?

You seem to have extra knowledge than many of us and I hope you do share when you have the time.

Welcome to our world.

Welcome!! Hello from Alaska! 654548 . I get almost as excited about another gardener from Alaska as I do when I see a new one from BC. It is so nice to have you on board with us. I am in central British Columbia but we have lived in the Yukon for years and spent a lot of time in Alaska. Kinda have a soft spot in my heart for places that are truly 'north'.

There are several on here who are from Alaska. SFG is a great way to garden up north. With all the tree roots and the short growing season, permafrost, etc.....well, I wish I had known about SFG when we lived up there.

What is WWOOFing?? I love the long daylight hours but don't miss the extended nights or the long winters.

If you have any questions, be sure to just jump in and ask. someone will be sure to help you out.

Hello from Alaska! 396615 J

Really nice to have you join us. Hope you have been able to take some time to visit the various forums and see what we are about.

Have you read the ALL NEW SQUARE FOOT GARDENING BOOK? Hope you find this is a method that you want to use for growing your garden.

Not at all familiar with your climate, but at least I am on the same side of the continent as you.

Again, Welcome!

I live in a very different climate from yours, but it will be interesting to see how you do sfgs in Alaska! Post pics when you can and keep us updated on how things go!

glad you\'re here glad you\'re here glad you\'re here

So glad to have you!

Wow! So you are starting an organic farm in Alaska. That has got to be an adventure. Do you know what you will raise?

Is this going to be a SFG farm with raised beds and all? If so, that's pretty exciting. I actually volunteer with a couple of local organic farmers that did their WWOOF in New Zealand. They use some SFG principles on their farm, but they more so use the old version of SFG not the All New version.

I hope you'll post some photos of your set-up once you get it going.

Take care and happy gardening!

Well, now, I am going to expect a lot of knowledge to come from you! Welcome aboard.

I would love to see where SFG fits into what you've committed to. I know nothing of the types of gardening that you are utilizing, but would love to learn more. This may be an SFG site, but we generally have an open mind when comparing the two. And, the Outside the Box subforum is a great place for just that.

But, shoot, you probably will have a lot of input for Compost and a lot of other areas, too.

Hope to see more of you!
