I've got two types, growing in my seeding box.

The first type I had a month ago, so I sterilized everything.

ACK! They're back!

I went to take more photos tonight, and they had all collapsed. They do that on a daily basis. They are tall and skinny, and have a black top that is shiny (melting?) by morning.

I think early enough they would look like this (I'll know tomorrow): http://www.flickr.com/photos/armaganorki/2764441615/sizes/n/in/photostream/

These are a composite from this morning...some are already collapsing:

The second ones I found tonight. Those black things are specks of dirty. These shrooms are very tiny.

I REALLY want to stop them from growing in my seeding box.

If not, at least I want to know if they are toxic or not.

I don't know what they are but wonder if they hurt or help the seedlings? With our recent discussions about adding mycchorizal inoculates to our soil mixes I wonder if fruiting bodies is a bad thing?

Ava, perhaps there is a mycologist in your area you can contact for a conclusive ID.

That's a great idea. These are seeds I'm testing to see if they will germinate (then I'll figure out where to plant them). If they don't, I'm not THAT worried. I'm more concerned I can't use this box for ANYTHING because of the shrooms.

I asked at HD for the innoculant before I planted my peas, and they said it was already in all their Kellogg products.

But they didn't ask if I was using Kellogg's! I love their stuff...I use N'Rich at home to top dress the roses, but don't have any of their dirt in my veggie boxes!

DOH!

Hi Ava - Will you keep me informed of what you find out? I'm in San Diego (we "met" on the regional forum a few weeks ago I believe). I have he same issue with what looks like the same mushrooms. Mine are excreting a black gooey substance that is tar-like in that it dries on whatever it touches and puts a thick black coat. Here are a couple pics. The 2nd one is my "crookneck" sign with the black tar dried on it. In the meantime, I've emailed our San Diego Master Gardener organization. They are usually pretty good about responding. I'll let you know if I get any useful info.

LOL...we have the same thing! A week ago it was beginning to rain, and I was out arranging the rain buckets. I took at look at my seeding box and had a full variety.

The entire window box was full of mushrooms, but this shot shows the variety of them. In the morning with the sun, they were gone.

I think the one that is inverting and looks like a butterfly is cool.

I've not written to the mushroom group, but I will. I took the photos off the card today.

It so WEIRD how they invert. And then 'melt.' And how the same shroom can look so different. http://www.mushroomexpert.com/coprinoid.html (is that them?)

Now how do we get rid of them? I sterilzed the soil already, and they were back in a month.

Can we eat them?

I did learn from a shroom site that it's not the shroom that makes you ill, it's the age of the shroom. Having had food poisoning from marinated shrooms, I understand!

Oh NO it is much more complicated than that
You REALLY have to know your mushrooms and even after I posted my answers I went back and noticed you had said that they were small, making them LESS likely to be what I said that they were.
Inky caps are large.
However many of the psychedelics can also look like Shaggymanes, only very small......
Shaggymanes are usually 4-5 inches tall and they grow along the side of the road. They are great for a very short period of time and then turn to INK. They tend to have an antabuse effect if you drink any alcohol with them (antabuse is the drug that you take daily quitting drinking and if you have any alcohol you get really sick)

It looks like Tiffany and I are both using window boxes...and have the same mushroom. If you compare the size of the box, the name tags, the writing, the fallen flowers, it gives you the idea of how small these are.

They stand maybe 1.5" tall and the top (when not inverting or shrinking) is maybe 1/3" across.

Psychedlics...how they'd get there?!? too funny!

just remember, you have to be very careful about mushrooms when considering whether or not they are edible. Some are very poisonous to us humans. Usually, mushrooms are beneficial to our soils. If it weren't for fungi, the earth as we know it would not exist. They are primary decomposers of dead materials.

I wonder if you both bought the bags of the same compost for your mix?
