Homemade Tiered Growing Stand
One of the things I love that has happened since the move to Iowa, is I have branched out of my comfort zone (computers) into all sorts of stuff: cooking, hunting, and as this post will show, woodworking!
I got the plans for this tiered growing stand from Fine Gardening: Nurture Seedlings on a Tiered Growing Stand (finegardening.com/how-to/articles/nurture-seedlings-tiered-growing-stand.aspx).
Started out with a bunch of 2x2 and a 2x4… funny story: don't take the total length of wood you need and divide it by 8' - Unless all the different lengths you need fit nicely into 8' lengths
- So after the second trip to the store, I had enough wood!

(That is my oldest son Cody in the pic)
I made one small adjustment, and changed the center pieces of wood for the shelves from 51" to 48" so I could cut an 8' length in half instead of needing a TON more wood.
I worked from a makeshift shop in my garage:
After a while, I had the shelves all put together:

Finally, this week I put it together:

And stained it:

Remaining steps:

Remaining steps:
- Spray a clear coat over the stain (Once this rain stops!)
- Attach the lights and the power strip
- Find the heating strips the article talks about
- Actually start some plants (Yes, I know I am waaay late for that!)

Your not WAY late, Doug. You could still start lettuce, spinach, arugula and such. You will need to get seedlings for broccoli and tomatoes and such. And many years I have direct seeded squash, cucumbers and such.
And there is always the starting of FALL planting!
That can start as early as July!
Nice stand!

Thanks all! I'll post more pictures once the lights are on it – and when my plants are started!
Thanks Cindi! If nothing else, it will be good for Fall planting like you said, and I'll have it for next year!Your not WAY late, Doug. You could still start lettuce, spinach, arugula and such. You will need to get seedlings for broccoli and tomatoes and such.

Better to just build 2, one for the CD's and one for the seedlings. Otherwise, you just end up with a pile of CD's and DVD's when it is time to start seeds! (since we ALL know the seeds will win)

Finished Stand
Here is what it looks like, in its new home in the basement. I still need grow bulbs for the top fixture (just using daylight ones currently), so it will be the last place I put plants.

Going to plant some things tomorrow night, but will still need to purchase transplants for some stuff since I am getting such a late start.
Here is the stand when it only had two lights on it, but it shows off the wood color better:

+1!!! You could probably sell those, Doug.
I miss having a basement too. There's no place to make a root cellar around here.

Re: Homemade Tiered Growing Stand
THANK YOU! That is just beautiful, I don't have a basement either so staining it would make it look great in the living room in front of the window. Great job!
