Tiered sfg
I am working on a tiered garden, 4x4, 3x3, 2x2. I need to know what you do underneath the upper tiers. It seems like it would be a waste of good soil by covering it up with the next bed. Do you put a bottom on the upper 2 tiers, and if so, what? What would you put under those tiers so they stay up?
Thanks, this is my first post and the second year of trying sfg

Re: Tiered sfg
If you didn't want the added depth you could use plywood underneath and brick or cinder bloc under that. Or... keep the depth and plant potatoes or really long carrots.
Re: Tiered sfg
I posted a similar question earlier today. I bought the pyramid kit from the SFG store and it came with wood for the boxes, wood for the grids, hardware and enough weed mesh to put underneath each tier. The directions did not have any specific steps for pyramids, just generic box instructions. I am guessing that you use the soil and the mesh to support each tier.

Hello Kelley and Ms. Minchin! Welcome to both of you. Your questions are very good as I was wondering the same thing! I wonder how the Foundation would answer this question. I think I'll just ask them and let you know!

Here is the answer straight from the top!
Two suggestions:
- fill the bottom half with sand. It drains well and does not use up valuable Mel's mix
- Put a bottom on it. Make sure to put a few holes for drainage.
Hope that helps.
