to the SFG Forum Kinggarbear. Have you had a chance to read the All New Square Foot Gardening book (2006) yet?

Not yet, but planning to... that's one of the reasons I was searching for SFG in the first place. I'm an old fan of Mel's from publication #1.
BTW... I lead with an inside joke... "expiramentation" has the root "expire" in it... meaning that I killed a lot of plants through experimentation !!!

Hello and . I'm new to SFG, and relatively new to gardening (was stuck with containers on tiny patios until now). I have family in your neck of the woods. Good luck with getting serious!

Actually, container gardening isn't a bad way to start. It makes you aware of the importance of soil, moisture, light & temperature.

I only grew herbs and mini flowers in the containers but it was experience with growing things. I used to keep a lot of houseplants, too, but then I had kids and that idea was nixed for a time...about to be re-implemented now the younger is old enough to understand "leave it alone." Hmm, I'm more experienced in gardening than I've been giving myself credit for...

Yes Indeed! Always been an agriculture type girl at heart. A currently priced Long Island 50 yr old home on a postage stamp lot ---- would instead purchase the elbow room of acres and a custom built home here in Ohio. It's a no-brainer, at least for me who was never terribly impressed with the ocean, nearby Manhattan, or ridiculous high cost of living. Can't find a reason to accept the stress being overcrowded and financially gouged at the same time. But with about 10 million (?) people on the Island there are plenty who think it is special, can't bear to leave their roots, or plain stuck....
I do visit and enjoy the good parts (good food, good people) when the opportunity arises, but live there again? Give up what I cherish? Nope

Hi and welcome to the Forum
I have seen women looking at jewelry ads with a misty eye and one hand resting on the heart, and I only know what they're feeling because that's how I read the seed catalogs in January - Barbara Kingsolver - Animal, Vegetable, Miracle
