Re: Big Stuff
There is more than just one squash in the bed, but all those huge big leaves belong to one acorn squash.
This is before we pulled the leaves off the middle of the bed and uncovered and trellises the watermelon, cantaloupe, two tomatos, a zuchinni and a bitter melon plant.
![Big Stuff - Page 5 Dscn0919](https://i.servimg.com/u/f43/15/93/96/99/dscn0919.jpg)
Some squashes seem to be forming and have no idea how big they will eventually be. Hope to have some for winter eating.

Josh wrote:I read that you can take the male flower when it is in bloom and freeze it till the female bloom opens and then take the male bloom and thaw it out and hand pollinate the female. I could see that by the time my female was blooming there would be a shortage on male blooms.
That's a nice tip to freeze the males. It reminds me of cattle A.I. Freeze the bull stuff to artificially inseminate the females w/ pipettes later on.
Soo...Pumpkin A.I. ? I might do that.

I'm not doing the tissue culture thing either. I'm happy just seeing how far these vines will develop.

Re: Big Stuff
Someone else had posted about the kids planting pumpkins on a hill, but I can't find the post now, I thought it would be neat to see them on the hillside growing, I think they were planting giant pumpkins there too, does anyone recall that post? I would like to know how they are coming along with the hillside of pumpkins.
Re: Big Stuff
Josh...that might have been me? My grandson and nephew planted them on Father's Day. We got about 80% germination, and they are just starting to get their "true" leaves. I still don't have my new Mel's Mix from GroWell, so we planted them and are hoping for the best until it gets here. I will try and remember to keep you updated. We snuck in a couple sunflower seeds too, so we'll see how it looks!

Lindacol,
Thanks for the link! That's what they are!
Re: Big Stuff
You're welcome Josh. I really had no idea what they were but the internet is truly amazing. I searched for red insect eggs on leaves images and there it was.

Re: Big Stuff
From the information I've gotten so far, I hope to get my 2 strongest vines to set 7 or 8 babies. Choose the best one and cut most of the rest. The best one is chosen by taking daily circumference measurements and choose the fastest grower.
Question for you Josh, have you started an insect spray program?? I have not and I think its very risky, yeah dumb, on my part. Yet the leaves and vines top and bottom look so strong. But I better get serious, like immediately.

Re: Big Stuff
Yes I have, but I am being very cautious of spraying because of the bees, the bees are everywhere on the flowers, but I do hand check the leaves, so far none show signs of being chewed on, but I did find those eggs on the one leaf, I hand removed those. I have two vines, so I'm waiting on second vine to get a pumpkin going good, once I get at least a couple going good, I'm removing blooms, so I may spray some then, the bees shouldn't be a worry then.uestion for you Josh,

Re: Big Stuff
Yes, I will start spraying tomorrow. I saw the pic of those red eggs on yours. I have two vines also. 1st vine has one female I hope will open the next 2 days and the 2nd vine has two females. I read if the female looks like she is going to open then the night before cover her in a bag so you can hand pollinate and Not get cross pollinated by something else that a bee might bring to her. I had no idea about any of this stuff, what a fun learning experience.
