I went down to Wilco and signed up for the pumpkin growing contest had and got my free giant pumpkin seeds.

I did not get what I was expecting...

I got the Big Moon variety...these go up to around 250 lbs or so....big pumpkins for sure but not monsters I was expecting.

I may have already have lost the pumpkin contest here in the forum if Llama Momma or Josh have Dill's Atlantic Giant. Sad

Good news is now that I know that the Wilco contest is with Big Moon pumpkins and not Dill's Atlantic Giant I can actually try to win Wilco's contest.

First prize is a 500 dollar gift card....that could buy me quite a bit of Mel's Mix..... Laughing

So all hope is not lost yet......

I have no idea how big my Heatmaster tomatoes are supposed to get, but I know that the only other seeds that I got that produce anything BIG are my sunflower seeds: the things are supposed to get 12 feet tall, with blooms about 20 inches across!

Not all is lost ! I was hoping to find Atlantic Giant but couldn't.
As for Josh, I don't know what variety he is growing. It will be interesting. I'm growing 3 varieties, small, medium, and large. Let the growing begin!

Let's say it dosn't have to be a completion against me, let's say it's just a BIG STUFF show what you can grow! bounce

It can be anything that you grew big, as long as you use Mel's mix. Cause even Mel says you can use containers for his mix! Maybe I should ask RoOsTeR if it's ok for us to have a Show Your Big Stuff contest...no prizes just braggen rights... Wink

givvmistamps I have big sunflower seeds too, I had forgot all about them! A few years aga, I grew a really tall sunflower in my SFG, even Mel was impressed! I used a old TV antenna as a support for it. It had several large flowers on it.

I have to see if I can get the ingredients for MM or have it shipped to me somehow...I couldn't figure out how to mix it with my situation the way it is when my boxes were assembled and filled, but got good suggestions here and think I could mix enough if I can get the stuff. OR, maybe I can get the Lowe's to order it in for me...a little wheedling...some begging...two innocent, wide-eyed young boys who'll be HORRIBLY disappointed if they can't grow the BIGGEST SUNFLOWER EVER for this summer biology project/contest... What a Face

Let me work on this!

I'll let you in on what I know and how I did mine, I don't know how tall it was, but it grew even taller because it didn't have a flower on it yet in that photo. Your gonna need a support to tie it to, mine did fine growing in the antenna, but since it grew up way past the antenna, and when it got the big flowers on it, a wind blew it over and it bent right there where the support stopped So I din't let that stop me Big Stuff - Page 2 601593

I got a ladder, two boards, the kind like I use for grids in my SFG's, some Duct tape, and I made a splint....I carefully raised the bent stem back up, put the two boards on the sides of the stem and taped it up, all the way to the top. It never fell over anymore, and it continued to grow and produce flowers! Just call me "Plant Dr. Greene" Razz

So, we could just post photos of the biggest specimen of everything we've grown, with measurements, and see who grew the biggest in each category. Very Happy

For myself, Daniel, I would prefer to grow everything ripe, tender, and tasty.

But do have fun growing the biggest. but not everything. And when you send pictures, put something beside the produce so that we can judge the size visually. Think like an archealogist. Very Happy

So, a ruler for things less than 12", and a yardstick or measuring tape for larger. A human for the giant sunflowers, with a notation on the height of the person standing there.

Camprn, what in the world is that man holding? It looks like some sort of onion or something. He looks as proud of it as though it were his baby.

Truth be told, that one had a "twin" that measured and weighed just about exactly the same. The prior year, I grew one that weighed 38.5 oz. Spacemaster variety.

And yes, my dear deceased friend Mary Lou and I held a cucumber carving ceremony and eventually polished it off. It did taste good, though possibly not quite as good as it would have if it had been harvested earlier.

I'll bet it was better than the stuff you find in a grocery store. I was already thinking of letting one cuke stay on the vine for as long as it looked healthy, now I know I will! My boys will really enjoy watching the one cuke grow, and grow, and grow!

My dad picked the first head lettuce today from his SFG, he had the biggest one.
It measured 23 inches across in the SFG.

It weighed 3 pounds 13 ounces with all of the leaves on it.

And with the outer leaves removed it weighed 2 pounds 2 ounces. Big Stuff - Page 2 802240
