Protecting Trellised Veggies

Protecting Trellised Veggies
...so I'm planning to use the tulle on the shorter plants, but what does everyone used to cover the trellised plants. Do you lay the tulle over them? Also, when you plant a companion plant to help protect one of your veggies, do you normally plant it in the same square or does it get its own square.

good questions...I too am wondering about protecting vining tomatoes from the sun (growing in bush form creates it's own shade).
I plan to plant marigolds, nasturtiums, and basil as soon as wether permits, even before tomatoes go in...I thinkI will experiment and plant some in the same square and some in adjacent squares only.

I am in so cal and I have direct sun all day and I did not use anything. Worked out ok. But, no reason you could not use tule over a trellis. Pretty easy I imagine. Can use clothespins to keep it in place.

An important consideration is: does the plant on the trellis self pollinate or does it need a pollinator? If it is the latter the plant needs to remain uncovered.

I can't find a list of what needs insect pollination and what is self pollinating. I was very surprised to learn peas and tomatos are self pollinating.
