Trellis veggies shading cool weather veggies Empty Trellis veggies shading cool weather veggies

It turns out that I want to plant a lot of veggies that need trellising (tomatoes, squash, beans) and I don't have the money to build as many boxes as I would need if I only plant them on the north side of the boxes. So, my question is... would it work to plant the trellised veggies on the north AND south side of the boxes and then plant cool weather veggies (lettuces, carrots, strawberries) in the middle? I'm thinking that once the trellised veggies get growing they can provide shade for the cool weather veggies but I'm not sure if it will be too much shade. This is my first year doing square foot gardening and only my third year (2 years of rows...ugh!) gardening at all so all help is greatly appreciated!

Try putting a trellis on the West side to shade from the hot afternoon sun.  I have trellises on N, E or W depending on the bed, crop rotation and what needs to be trellised. Some beds have a trellis on two sides.   I always leave the S open.

Hi Wife1.  My plot is on the NW corner of my back yard.  It faces east, so everything gets a lot of sun till about 2 pm.  It's completely fenced with 2' beds around the outer perimeter.

I am able to put trellising on the south side perimeter because in my case, it won't be blocking anything.  But I'll be leaving the east side open and not trellising anything in the middle.  (Although I may try the north sides of the interior boxes next year to see what happens...)

I think it really depends on how your garden faces.

If you want to see photos, look for "Finally!  Pics of the garden!" under the gallery tab.
