Tendrils And Vines Trellised By Trees
Hey everyone. I'm going to attempt to grow passionflower (passiflora incarnata), and I'm also starting some sweet pea flowers. One option is to plant these at the base of a couple of oaks in my yard, adjacent to the tree. I wonder if it's a bad idea to encourage vining/climbing plants to grow up trees. Is there a downside to this?

To clarify, is it ill advised for a travelling plant to completely engulf an oak tree?

I don't know if either of those plants will 'take over ' the trees. Even tho they may not be listed as a parasite, some trees just cannot handle other plants climbing in them. Here in SC, Oaks seem to be a magnet for other plants. If you see an Oak, with Wisteria or Spanish moss in them, you can just bet the Oak is going to die, maybe it's just weak to start with?

plants under oak trees
I may be off base here, it has been decades since I was in the SE (Atlanta). However, oaks out here in the southwest do not like watering inside the drip line, that might be needed to grow the plants you mention.
For other trees though, might be an interesting idea...

Re: Tendrils And Vines Trellised By Trees
for the replies.
I'll probably look to trellis the flowers differently, just wondering where. I have no room in the 4x4 raised bed, and the other area I have doesn't get sun after 1:00pm. The properties in my development each have two oaks. To aerodyne, I'll have to check it out to be sure, but I think the oaks that are on the common areas have development-provided drip irrigation right at the trunk; but I could be wrong. The ones on the individual properties don't.
Anyways my oaks are less than 12" around, and I think I'll let them develop naturally in their "formative" years.

the county put drips/bubbles on my green belt (Coast Live Oak) trees, I have apple borers as a result. I planted more tress on my own drip line and turned it off last year, no problems.

Even as we speak, I have Blue Lake Green Beans (Wright's Strain) climbing 10 feet up into a peach tree. Still trying to figure out how to harvest the beans (extension ladder?). Peach tree doesn't seem to mind. Nonna
