Hello everyone.

I am totally new to SFG and starting my first one here in the Willamette Valley.

I am excited to to get started and am eager to learn from the more experienced SFGers here so I can make my small garden as successful as possible.

Hello from Oregon! 654548 Daniel9999

So glad you joined us. We have several members in the Willamette Valley. This is a great group of people and we all enjoy discussing our favorite subject, SFG. I hope you have read the ALL NEW SQUARE FOOT GARDENING book published around 2006, it is based on the improvements Mel made to SFG. No double digging, next to no weeding, and it certainly makes my life much simpler.

Keep in touch, ask questions and please share your progress.

I am just so new here I didn't know the proper forum abbreviation for the new addition was ANSFG! Opps! Embarassed

I guess every forum has their own abbreviations and it can be confusing, especially when we use both ANSFG (for the book) and SFG (for the garden) in the same sentence. Very Happy

Again, we are very happy you are here and hope to hear about your progress.

Hey there again and Hello from Oregon! 396615 again! First SFG huh? But not new to gardening it sounds like, from your PNW post. Shorty's Nursery just gave me the link for a planting calendar from the Oregon Tilth that was created for use at a demonstration garden in the Willamette Valley:

http://tilth.org/files/oec-1/the-toolshed/planting%20and%20harvest%20calendar.pdf

Hoe you post pictures of your garden as it progresses. I have one pea sprout today, but I'm spying "chunky" rain out the window so it's probably wishing it had stayed underground with its siblings.

My garden is in a sorry state right now...... not much to see and I be a little embarrassed to show pics of it in its current condition.

I do have some pics from last year I can show you though...

Hello from Oregon! Garde157

As you can see its an apartment complex community garden of sorts....the site is far from ideal being so small, shady, unlevel, with scattered tree stumps and their rotted roots lying here and there so I still have a quite a bit of work ahead of me this year (I only started it last year).

I will post more pics of my progress on the NW forum sometime later.

Hey you started a community garden at your apartment complex? That's amazing - good for you! Are they all SFG beds, or can people adopt them and use them however they like?

Post  Daniel9999 3/16/2012, 7:54 pm

Sorry about the late reply...I have been holed up in my apartment sick with a terrible flu the last week....I barely gotten out of bed at all lately. Ugh.

Anway....Yes I have started a community garden at my complex and it is set up in a way that anyone can plant what they wish in it. Whatever people want to plant I plan to make room for it.

Unfortunately they are not all SFG beds yet as I did not have the money at the time we started it last year but it is my hope this year to eventually convert all the beds to SFG and I have put aside this years tax refund money for that purpose.

So far I have found a great deal on some nice looking cedar raised beds kits at my local Home Depot by Greense Fence Company...they are $34.97 each and exactly 4 by 4 feet 7 inches deep. I have bought four of them so far. Sure I could have made them myself but as you can tell from the photo above I am not that much carpenter and seeing as its a community garden located in a common area I would like the beds to look as nice as possible.

I also have several bags of Gardener and Bloome Harvest Supreme and Worm-Gro composts along with Whitney Farms Planting, Mushroom and Steer Manure composts on order at my local Wilco waiting to be delivered some time this week.

I already have some peat moss and coconut coir ready here at my apartment.

The vermiculite of course has been somewhat troublesome to find and after asking around for it at quite a few nurseries, hydroponics centers, and garden and farm supply stores around here I finally found some on the Home Depot website (of all places). 20 dollars for a 2 cubic feet bag....and they are currently having a special promotion where they are offering few shipping on orders over 49 dollars!

WoHoo! Free shipping on vermiculite! Score!

I also manged to clear out some roots from those those nasty stumps out there before I got sick.

I hope to get out there and do some more work as soon as I feel better.
