so i just used an online garden planner to lay out the garden of my dreams and it showed i would have something just over 1200 square feet to fill. some of that will be permanent plantings of raspberries, gooseberries, grapes and figs but still lol holy cow. of course, i'll never get it done this year, what with the greenhouse and all, but some day it should be a heck of a garden.

man alive, i just used the mels mix calculator, it will take 200 cf of each ingredient. oh well, if i start buying as soon as the greenhouse is done, will only take a few years maybe. the journey of a thousand squares starts with one, right?

i know right? mom always said i had champagne taste on a beer budget. so i guess i should be realistic and decide if i really do need all of that. i'll just start with fencing in the whole area, putting in the permanent things where they go, and go one bed at a time from there. the end goal is to help my family with food costs, (even if they are grown, momma still likes to help), and maybe generate a little income to support my other hobbies when i retire. oh well, maybe it will be a reality by the time i do retire.

Im starting small but one of my end goals is to expand enough to grow a significant portion of food to help with cost as well as eating healthier; be nice to be less dependant on outside sources too. I dont remember if mel states it in his book or not but I know I have read elsewhere that about 700sqft is whats needed, using intensive planting like sqft gardening, to supply one person with all the food needs minus meat and what not.

I doubt I will ever get that much garden built but its nice to dream Smile

yep jk, if you are going to dream, why not dream big? i've been dreaming of a greenhouse for 20+ years and this year i am finally going to get one that is at the top of my dreamscale. 22 x 14, heated, two doors, all glass fronted. don't think i'll have to wait that long for the garden area to be done, as it can be done a box at a time. ok, some are big boxes but none the less, one at a time.

Great Plan! We all do what we can to get where we want.

minervalong, have you looked into hugelkultur for your perennial beds? In short, you either dig down and add rotting logs to the hole or you can pile the wood on top of the ground and add soil and compost to plant in. It is amazingly simple and ELIMINATES the need for additional water.
