We're expecting.... chicks. Any Square Feet for chickens? Icon_biggrin

What would you SFG chicken owners plant to share with your chickens? Besides the obvious scraps and weeds, what would you plant specifically to supplement their feed? Have you ever tried it?

We're brainstorming ways to cut down on the cost of organic feed and looking into raising mealworms. We have plans for a chicken tractor that will protect them from the hawks during the day and a coyote proof coop for night time (free ranging is obviously going to be limited here near San Diego!)

We have plenty of garden space and everything is going like gangbusters! It seems like a good idea to try to plant some chicken squares...

Any feedback welcome!

Any Square Feet for chickens? Empty Re: Any Square Feet for chickens?

My chickens tried to claim the tomato sqaures as their own so I put up another fence, we feed them the watermelon rines but mostly since they can free range they fend forthemselves. We do throw all the bad veggies like tomato, sqaush etc that are rotting or moldy across the fence, I dont ever have to pick up any of the scraps. It is tough to decide wether to feed the chickens the kitchen scraps or send them to the compost pile, but I have decided that if the chickens eat the scraps they will ultimatly generat compost from their droppings so I still get the benifits..

In short I personnally would not give up any sqaures to the chickens just share the leftovers with them.

Welcome to the wonderful world of chickens in the sfg !!!
