Buying seeds?
We've just moved to a house with a small yard and no veggie gardens. I'm already planning for this coming season but I have no clue where to get seeds from. Are there local seed companies around the Ottawa/Renfrew valley area? Or anywhere in Ontario? And do they have free catalogues?

Here are a couple of Canadian sites for great seeds.

Re: Buying seeds?
Watch for the "Seedy Sunday" event that is held in Pembroke at Fellowes High School each year.
It should be coming up soon. It is a seed swap and there are local seed vendors there too. Plus some interesting / educational seminars.
http://www.ottawariverinstitute.ca/news/644-seedy-sunday-march-4-2012-call-for-volunteers
Looks like it will be on March 4 this year. See poster at link above. It is a great winter day out for us gardeners as we dream about spring!
You can also go visit Huberts Springhill Nursery; just head towards Pembroke on Petawawa Blvd and you will see it on the right.....they are open even during winter most days / weekends and they already have seeds available. They carry seeds from Ontario Seed Company (OSC) and others. They will order in for you if they don't have what you want or will at least help you figure out who carries it (they have catalogues from several companies).

Re: Buying seeds?
I ordered from Vesey's, Tree & Twig and Heritage Harvest this year.
Tree & Twig was extremely fast - about a week and a half - even when I mailed a check. They're a smaller organic style farm in the Niagara region that has a lot of nice heirlooms.
http://treeandtwig.ca
The Heritage Harvest was slightly slower responding than T&T, but they're more established. The catalog doesn't look like much if you get a paper copy... but the darn thing is PACKED (73 varieties of beans, 198 varieties of tomatoes... yes, I counted, etc). I had a lot of trouble trying to narrow things down lol. They're located in Manitoba, and have more heirlooms than you could shake a stick at.

Vesey's is Vesey's. They've apparently been going downhill, but most of my order was for germination stuff anyway. I'm only getting two of their seeds: a bok choy (since I can't find it anywhere else) and a packet of everbearing alpine strawberries.

local seeds
P.P.
Are you looking for "garden variety" veggies or rare and Heirloom varieties?
My favorite for rare and Heirloom this year is Terra Edibles in Foxborough ON. They have a website, http://www.terraedibles.ca/index.html
a free printed catalogue and a retail outlet.
As well, Heritage Harvest Seed (mentioned earlier), I haven't purchased from them yet, as, I will see them at our local Seedy Saturday event, but, they have an excellent selection of Heirlooms as well. Google "seedy saturday" or check Facebook for a schedule.
For a hands on experience, store, greenhouse, experts, I visit T&T seeds locally in Winnipeg. They ship across Canada as well.

For those that have some time on their hands, here is a link for the most comprehensive Canadian supplier list I have come across to date:

Canadian Tire have a large assortment of McKenzie seeds and I found dozens of seeds at the Dollarama and the Great Canadian Dollar store.
