Planting by the Dark of the Moon
The moon is favorable(moon is waning, dark of moon) planting potatoes(root crops) Feb. 8th to 20th, or Mar. 9th to 21st
The moon is favorable(moon is waxing, light of the moon) plant above ground crops, Feb 21st-Mar. 8th(peas-Jan. 23rd-Feb. 7th)
I looked in my copy of the'Old Farmers Almanac' to get the dates.
I didn't follow last yr. for I started SFG late in the season, which did good, but may follow it more this yr. I have my garden peas ready to plant in Jan. Will see how it goes. Jo

Take it with a grain of salt! I looked in the Almanac for this week, and it says it will be cool, with 54 the avg. Well, it's predicted by the weatherman, to go into 20's at night, 40's for the high. go figure.

Sounds about as accurate as the weatherman. Right now we are forecast for "blowing snow". The wind has been blowing for 24 hrs, but we have NO SNOW! There is nothing to blow around except leaves. Where do they get this stuff from?!

I planted my garlic by the moon in October. We'll see if it makes a difference. Will try with spring planting too.

Did you have a cat and a beesom broom with you as well Camp ?
I just bunged in there blocks of nine elephant garlic cloves at three different times each a few week week apart . I don't know if that coincided with moon phases or not but all of the two earler plantings of the cloves have come up.
I'm taking a bit of a punt here , for the bulbs came from different Supermarkets and are Spanish imports , they may or may not grow as hoped for.
Planting one of 16 Nov is about an inch & a half high , planting two of 1 Dec is 1/2 inch high , the last lot were put in yesterday .
Most of the researched stuff I've read points fair and square to the lengthening hours of day light to kick start things as there is more ultra violet light & other low spectrum light penetrating through the atmosphre for longer to not only warm the soils but it apparently has other plant friendly effects like stimulating worms and moulds in the soils .
When you think about the use of cool grow lights over plants and sown seeds it kind of confirms it ( well it does at least to me ).
I've just finished reading a kindle gardening book by a British guy ( John Harrison ) with over 50 yrs horticultural experience under his belt based on the scientific stuff that was deeply researched and used to help the victory gardens of 1940's and later to over come the food shortages .
He dwelt at length about moon planting and says from his records and test trials he found no advantage and in some cases had a worse crop than when he planted according to lenghtening day light hours.
