Oh, man, do I ever hate that it's dark now by 5 p.m. I don't have time to visit my garden after I get off from work! It's already dark!

These cheery words were said to me tonight by a customer and I couldn't wait to get to my computer to share this note of optimism!

Hug that customer for me Martha!!
BTW, I've recently been informed that the day to plant shallots is on the shortest day of the year......harvest on the longest. Don't know if it is true or not BUT it gives me something to look forward to.

Glad to know I'm not the only one that celebrates Dec 21/22 each year. People think I'm crazy, but I tell them I'm only being optimistic. Conversely, June 22 makes me sad, too. Let's just say I like being on the upswing.

A few years ago while travelling it was June 21st in Anchorage where at that time, the Alaskan sun does not go down. Land of the midnight sun. Imagine gardening at midnight in a dusk kind of sunlight? But today Dec 3rd the sun rises at 9:49am and sets 3:48pm.

Yes, indeed, but hopefully this cheerful thought will help me get through it with a modicum of cheerfulness!

Even here in CA I totally get doing a huge bonfire and dancing all night. I am looking forward to the light!

I have the same feelings as you, BBG, even though June 22 is the longest day, I still have that twinge of sadness, compensated by the happy feeling on December 21/22.
Edited to add: Now it is only 18 days to Winter Solstice.
Re: Only 19 more days until the days get longer!
Im with you BBG.
It's dark here by 3:45 these days and it makes for a very short day indeed. Cannot wait till the days get longer!
Thank you for sharing Martha!

When I read that it was only 19 days (now 17 I think) until the days started getting longer, I clapped like a little kid and thought so glad someone shared that encouragement!!! I am someone that needs the "sun", it helps my mind. It is why we moved to the south, for the mild winters. Thank you thank you for this!

For me, it sparked the "oh sheesh, time to start planning that broccoli again" thought. I was shocked at how close things are getting. Heck, I still have spinach growing (albeit slowly) in the garden.
As for Anchorage, I have a close friend that hails from Anchorage. I remember watching an old VHS recording of him and his friends driving around town on their college's summer vacation documenting the solstice at 1145pm for all the non-believers down south. He also mentioned there were winters where you had the defroster on high, the car warm, and your breath would still freeze on contact to the INSIDE of the windshield. You had to use the scraper AS YOU DROVE some mornings....

Being originally from CA, it never even occurred to me that this could happen - until I moved to South Dakota! I keep a long-handled scraper for the outside of the windows, and a short-handled one for the inside of the windows!

I used to have the scraper in hand while I drove, but that was only because it was many, many years ago, when I was young enough to not mind having a car with no working heat!

Re: Only 19 more days until the days get longer!
Haha! I remember those days with rock solid frozen feet at the end of the trip.
I did not realize how coddled my kids were until my son told me about encountering ice on his windshield in Folsom CA and he didn't know what to do so he backed into the sun and waited. LOL. I told him that is what credit cards are for - emergency ice scrapers.

I still give him a A for critical thinking. Lots of kids would call home and ask.

Haha.. I'm glad I'm not the only one keeping track of this..(though now it's only 17 days). Here the official sunset time is 4:45pm today, but because we're on a slope it seems to set much sooner than that.martha wrote:

And many years back, I lived in Howard County. Have you "chatted" with Josh, our other young gardener?

Thanks Martha for the compliment! No, I haven't chatted with Josh, I've heard of him on the SFG occasionally though. Does he live in Maryland? I'm about 7 miles east of Frederick city.martha wrote:Weatherkid, I love your avatar!
