Re: How Many Square Feet Do You Have?
119 square feet plus two 2' x 4' beds on wheels that I will be baby sitting for 6 months = 135, plus the 5-gallon buckets, BTE strip and a few large pots. More than I ever thought I could squeeze in this tiny back yard.
Re: How Many Square Feet Do You Have?
Sometimes I feel like the answer is "Not enough" but then other times it could be "Too Many"

RC, You ARE living large since you are using the SFG method...after all, that's one of the many benefits of SFG'ing.RC3291 wrote:I'm going to say 32 in my raised bed and 10 more in containers. Livin' large, not.

RE:-how-many-square-feet-do-you-have ?
At the present I have 117 and I'm filling another 4X8 bed will take me up to 149. Have to stop there, have to leave room for the dog. I built a large ring around our one small tree in the front yard using pavers from my old beds. I have a few flowers interplanted with Rainbow chard and I plan to plant some Lacinato Kale for height, I have to go slow with this to keep HOA at bay.

HOAs can present a challenge, sometimes even for the backyards.newbeone wrote:I built a large ring around our one small tree in the front yard using pavers from my old beds. Gee, I feel like a slacker with my measly 16. And 9 of them are tomatoes. Oh, I forgot two pots. Those are tomatoes, too.

Naw, just means you're more efficient in getting what you want out of a small space.hammock gal wrote:Gee, I feel like a slacker with my measly 16. And 9 of them are tomatoes. Oh, I forgot two pots. Those are tomatoes, too.

Re: How Many Square Feet Do You Have?
I started out with four small beds totaling 28 sq ft and 31 pots, so don't feel like a slacker. It's better to expand slowly than to build a SFG that is larger than time, energy, shade conditions, composting making can support.
Re: How Many Square Feet Do You Have?
160 square feet. Took about 5 years to build up to it.

I stumbled on this thread and it was very interesting to see everyone else's numbers. Any updates?
2 ( 4' x 10' x 12") = 80 Squares

Re: How Many Square Feet Do You Have?
Yup. I still have 72 in the Salad Bar (OS) and now 24 in my new ANSFG bed. Last time I counted containers, but not anymore. They're in a whole different category and difficult to keep track of, so I'll just say "lots."brianj555 wrote:I stumbled on this thread and it was very interesting to see everyone else's numbers. Re: How Many Square Feet Do You Have?
I'm finished expanding. I have roughly 48' of containers and 155' of BTE, plus 96 sfg squares, and a dozen fruit trees. That's all, Folks! (Not counting microgreens and experiments in the house.)sanderson wrote:A question on a SFG Facebook page prompted me to find this old thread. Have your gardens grown shince you posted. I started with 28 and now have 119, plus some 5-gallon buckets and 40 ft of BTE.
Re: How Many Square Feet Do You Have?
Wow. How do you guys find the time to care for all that? Between my job and my 2 1/2 year old daughter , I’m lucky to get 30 minutes per day and a hour or two each day on the weekends. Now, I am a teacher so June and July (only work 4 hours a day max) I could care for 5 times as much, but not the rest of the year.

Re: How Many Square Feet Do You Have?
I guess I've not been paying enough attention. Did the older posts get deleted? I guess it really doesn't matter, I just thought I'd compare what I had to start, with what I have now. Jo

Re: How Many Square Feet Do You Have?
I have 63 square feet. Some of my original boxes are re-purposed window boxes, about a foot deep but the mix isn’t. Deep, about 18” rather than 12”...
I am planning on a strawberry box next year. Might use my 3x7 for berries. It isn’t my fave as far as depth. I like a deeper box.

Re: How Many Square Feet Do You Have?
I am adding 18 squares to my previously reported 153 squares. The new squares are old style SFG which I started to prepare a few weeks ago and which I hope will be useable next Spring. We also have non-SFG veggie/fruit growing areas in our garden.
Total area of SFG (old and new styles) will be 171 sq.ft. for 2018.

I'm retired with no other responsibilities.brianj555 wrote:Wow. How do you guys find the time to care for all that? Re: How Many Square Feet Do You Have?
No kids/pets, and my responsibilities/work are only part time. The garden has eaten into my hobby time and there are chores I don't do as often as I should. I use the dishwasher more than I used to. My garden doesn't get the level of care it would if it were smaller, sometimes things DO get neglected and fail.brianj555 wrote:Wow. How do you guys find the time to care for all that? Starting most of my seeds inside lessens the amount of daylight hours I would use trying to tend and protect young seedlings outside. The rain was pretty well spaced this year, so I didn't need to spend much time watering. BUT there are a few crops that would have benefited if I had given them more personalized watering (celeriac and crosnes, maybe the carrots.) I also plant a lot of things that, for my garden, are pretty much sow (or transplant) and ignore until harvest time: beans, peas, arugula, parsnips, sunchokes, garlic, onions, many of the herbs (basil needs attention; thyme doesn't), and flowers.
The brassicas take time because of the cabbage pests. Using my Agribon fabric prevented most of the caterpillars in the bed I had covered, but made the bed too humid/shady so I had slug/snail/sowbug problems instead. The tulle-covered bed still had snails, but less sowbug/slug damage and almost no caterpillars (I didn't get it on until midseason.) I need to sew more tulle together for the other beds. And the beets will be moving into the protected brassica beds next year, so they can get protection from the leaf miners. I'm hoping the tulle is fine enough to stop the adult flies from coming to lay eggs...
The nightshades (tomatoes especially, plus fleabeetles on the eggplants) and the squash/cucumbers/melons are the real time eaters for me because of keeping up with the trellising, and pests, and various diseases.

I'm bumping this older thread because we have some new folks. For those who have posted here before, how has your SFG changed, if any?
