Compost

Just a question for those of you who compost in the Baltimore MD region. Do you have any sources of expired vegetables in your area? I have asked the Food Lion and Giant stores in my area and they say their corporate policies forbid them giving any expired vegetables to anyone. They fear people will eat them, get sick and then sue them. They have to throw them into their dumpsters. I emailed Whole Foods recently but they haven't responded. My wife and I really don't have that many left over veggies to compost. I want to up my compost production but have been stymied by the lack of veggie scraps. Just wondering if anyone has had any success with this.

I could be wrong here, but I do know Whole Foods has their own composting program. I have gotten their compost here locally (Colorado) so I don't know if they would part with their scrapes, but hey, it never hurts to ask right?

It is actually a really nice compost too!

You may have more success with a local restaurant.

In sales, they tell you to overcome objections before they are even voiced. You could type up and bring an "agreement" with you stating that the fruit and vegetable scraps are NOT for human consumption and solely for the purpose of composting (and solely for your personal use) and that the owner is not responsible nor liable for misuse of the scraps.

Actually bring TWO copies - one for each of you. You sign, the owner signs and MAYBE put in a space for a witness signature for extra protection (for the owner).

Oh, and smaller, local groceries (Latino or Asian food markets) might be better to deal with than larger chain stores.

I also wonder if there might be scraps to haul away at the end of the day at a local farmer's market - although they might make their own compost.

It's not in Baltimore, but Mom's Organic Market in Jessup (Howard County) will give you scraps for composting.

Howard County, that's Hahrd County - 1 1/2 syllables!

Says Martha, a former Hahrd County resident who sometimes suffers from some minor nostalgia!

I got a reply from the whole foods store and they said they support any effort. They gave me a phone number and cotact name to work with. We shall see! Very Happy

Check out any local farmer's markets. I used to work at one a few years ago and I know that all of the produce stands used to throw their unwanted/damaged stuff in dumpsters out back.

If you don't mind dumpster diving, I say go for it.
