Has any one use or disposed of nearly 20 Kg ( 44 pounds ) of dried all in one complete food in small doses in their compostings ?

I ask because a few weeks ago we went to the regular supply point for the dog food and they had run out .
Next delivery was 1 a week away so we took the suggested substitute dried food 20 kg sack , the only trouble is that it went through pooch faster than a high speed train.

he's back on his normal stuff now and I'm considering a sprinkle or two of the feed in each compost bin between various layers of other materials .

I know some of you guys have said you use pinmeal for a nitrogen boost in the heap , but there are fats and oils in this dog food as well ....do you think it might sour things or just add to the diversification of it all ?

Plantoid I have used high-protein dog food as a compost activator (helps heat the pile). Not sure if it has to be high protein, that is just the advice that was passed to me. I have also worked in a grocery store (we had a real butcher, I was the produce person, we helped each other a lot) and have seen what the dog food people pick up for converting into dog food. YUCK! I would not want it in my garden.

Have you considered giving it to a shelter (in the US we have places for stray and abused pets called shelters) or group that provides pet food for owners who are down-on-their luck? That might be a better use.

All the best and sorry for your puppy’s tummy trouble.

My guess is that it went thru your dog like a frieght train because it was high in corn. Which is fine to add to the compost. Probably better in your compost than your dog actually. Corn isn't the greatest for dogs... I dump all our wasted chicken feed in piles and it does heat it up nicely. I does give it more odor, but that isn't a concern for me. I might as well put the waste to good use. I can't see that if you have some left over that it would hurt. Might attract some rodents tho.

Thanks guys,
Thats the sort of thing I was after hearing .
I'll not be sending it to a rescue center etc. because it may just have the same effect on the inhabitants and that's not fair to the pooches.

Yes it is high in rolled maize and what looks like rolled oats . I'll bung a handful at a time each week in the pile , for my composters are the 1.5 mtr high cone plastic tub ones with good fitting lids and they all stand on a slightly sloping smooth concrete base so vermin invasion etc shouldn't be a problem either.
