I heard noise outside, and low and behold, it was a neighbor with a BIG barrel of alpaca manure for the compost pile! Delivered even! Love it!! cheers

Good for you southern gardener. I've been trying to set up a time with a local alpaca/rabbit farm to pick up some manure but it's been tough.

Poo delivery, I am so impressed!! We wheelbarrow our llama beans to the gate and friends drive up and shovel it into their own garbage pails. Congratulations!!

Yes, we were very surprised of the delivery! He told us to drop off a barrel, and he would call us when it was 'full". Guess he decided to deliver it too!! cheers

Stripesmom - have you tried googling Llama farms in Iowa? I found several when I tried. Is your State Agricultural College nearby? They might direct you too. How about contacting your large animal veterinarians? They might be willing to help direct you to llama owners. Good Luck!

hey llama momma.....weren't you the one telling me that llama manure is similar to rabbit manure and is safe to add to gardens at any time? Also since llamas and alpacas are similar animals, does that mean that their manure's the same?

I'm picking up a load of alpaca manure and rabbit manure on Saturday.

Yes I have llamas and llama poo is safe to use because llamas are such efficient converters of food compared to other animals that the manure has very low carbs = a very low burn factor compared to other manures. This info is easily googled if you want to verify. Anyway alpacas are a close cousin and probably eat a similar diet (?) honestly I can't really speak for alpaca manure. But if we're talking about using llama poo in compost I use it exclusively (so far) and I make llama tea for the plants.

I don't know if you meant "no odor" concerning llama manure? When my husband brought back a load of manure from the back field it was 3 years old, no smell and it looked like black soil.
But-- fresh manure does smell though! The intensity of the odor is far less than your usual farm animals, cow, pig, chicken, and horse. You will find many farm animal barns to be far away from the house. Not so with llamas, you can have a barn a hundred feet away from the house without air pollution so to speak. Very Happy

Thanks for the info llama momma. My problem is I always put too much thought into a lot of the things I do.

I made arrangements to pick up the 30 gallons of alpaca poop tomorrow. Sometime next week, I'm getting the rabbit poop from the same place. cheers

Sounds wonderful. And another thing you mentioned was if I was the one to recommend rabbit manure. I was not. But I read it somewhere too on the forum, but I don't know who recommended it. I do recall that any animal that is a vegetarian is a good source of manure.

oh yes I think you remarked that llama beans seemed similar in size to rabbit doo! My baby llama produces rabbit size doo. The adults produce kidney bean size doo. Kind of funny, how many forums can you discuss the finer points of manure rofl

What's kind of amazing to me is the number of different manure sources. I always knew about cow manure and chicken manure. But Rabbit, llama, alpaca manures, etc?? Never knew they were beneficial.

Hey....I never even heard of an alpaca until sometime shortly before I joined this forum.

Looks like all those natural sources of fertilizer have been around forever. Sad how "sophisticated" ? humans came along with fake chemical fertilizers.... So nice to connect with people who are trying to go back and do things the better way! I never heard of llamas or alpacas till about 10 years ago either. Lllamas are fascinating creatures with many uses.

I got back from the alpaca farm. I got a couple of feed bags full of the poop and I also got one bag of rabbit poop/straw. I'm going back next week to get more Very Happy

For me it's not so much a desire to cut back on chemical fertilizers. I just want to compost because it's fun. Very Happy

Man, have I ever changed since I was a teenager! I never would have believed that I would ever be jealous of somebody because they could get alpaca or llama poop! rofl

I think it's a good thing we have this forum to rave about our love for poop! I'm not sure others would understand!

I know my Mom sure doesn't understand my obsession with compost. She doesn't understand that there's differences between all of the different manures I'm putting in it.

And alpacas and llamas?? Who would've thought that there are farms here in Pennsylvania that raise them?

Now you got me looking around locally for some llama pooh...like I don't have enough critter manure around here already lol. But it sounds great (great pooh?) and I really would like to use some in a compost bin, just to compare it to what I have been using. cyclops

In the past, I had mentioned to the wife getting rid of our "meat goats" and getting llamas. I failed... Sad

That alpaca ranch I went to yesterday is a few blocks away from my ex-girlfriend's house. I never saw it there before.
It's amazing what you can find, when you need to find it.

I see llamas and alpacas all over around here. If the people that raise them are anything like me, they will be more than willing to give up some dung! lol!

When I got to that alpaca farm yesterday, the husband and wife seemed thrilled that I wanted to take some. I gave them 10 bucks for the 3 large bags of manure. They were heavy. They probably weighed about 20 lbs each.
