Trellis

I used 7x7 nylon mesh. Found it at Johnny's on sale last winter. My hope is both the pole beans and the tomotoes will climb them successfully.

Last year I use the metal stand you find at the box stores but high winds took some down and they definately are not suitable structures.

I will keep you updated as I know conduit is the suggested product; if needed i will change to conduit next season.

I officially became a cattle panel gardener today. Tractor Supply had them on sale. Bought three, 2 for garden and 1 for grape vines I want to plant. Now If I can just get some help getting them off the truck.

wow, sort of looks like a group of covered wagons...
What is tulle?
You have quite a project. I am curious why tabletops instead of on the grounds? Is it for easier access, being able to stand up and garden?

You are right, bad knees and a weak back. Tulle is the nylon netting used for wedding veils. Works great to keep out bugs and weed seeds blowing in the wind. Learned about it from another forum member.

Here is my entire set up last year

Kay you have a beautiful set up and it clearly appears that it is much easier to work with
Shannon, I grew my tomatoes up strings last year and I can totally understand what you are going through BIG hug
I am afraid to ask..... how tall are your tomatoes now?

Kay, your raised beds look wonderful. I'll have to look for a similar material to use over my raised beds. Do you also cover the ends or just over the main pvc hoops?

Shannon, Yikes! I hope you were able to rescue your tomato plant and get a new string tied quick!

The ends are covered until plants need a trellis. Then I move the hoops in one square. I plan to keep everything covered until the blossoms need pollinating or something has reached the trellis. Even then I may keep the root area covered. Still playing with how it will work. But it sure saved my son's garden last year and kept a lot of wind borne seeds out of mine. (I didn't have a summer garden last year)

My solution is a little odd and needs a little 'splainin!

I am a professional artist and I began my career doing craft shows and we used to wholesale our products so we attended trade shows. One of my first craft show booth designs used grid wall panels. Well... my sweet husband being one to never throw anything away as long as we have space in our 40' container that's on our property... (that's a whole 'nuther story, LOL!) I discovered we still had them.

They are 2 feet wide, 6 feet tall and have 4 inch openings with white powder coating. With a metal fence stake for wire fencing for stability, they worked perfectly to hold my pumpkins, squash and other vines last season.

So I'm going to do the entire garden with them this year. They look great and worked well. Eventually they'll rust out or become useless, but they were paid for 25 years ago so I might as well get full use out of them!

They actually work exactly the same way as the "Tomato Stake-a-Cage" link shows.

I will do that when I get things going. Because we're zone 8a or b, we're getting close to being able to rev our engines and get things going. Our last frost day is usually around March 15th. I want to be especially careful though this year as it's been the coldest in a really long time.

My table top gardens have been about 70% planted with cold tolerant salad greens, peas etc., the beans, zuccini and other squash, tomatoes and the large stuff will have to wait until a little later. I'm going to use the gridwall on the North side of my 3 table tops as well. I'll need a ladder to pick but that's fine!
