Location for my SFG Boxes

I figured I should post this here and not on my "Hello" thread in the Welcome Mat.

The
only possible area for my SFG is at the back of the house in an area
from the oak tree to the shed. It's approximately 25ft long and 10ft
wide.

This is taken from the shed looking towards that oak tree. This looks sort of in a western direction.




This is the part of the back yard that's slightly hilly. It's hard to tell how big of a slope it is but it goes from the base of the shed to maybe a foot or so past that green barrel.

Someone from this forum (I forget who) said that the SFG boxes have to be level and I can build it into the slope. I'm not so sure I'd be able to do that because like I said in my "hello" thread, I'm an idiot when it comes to tools. So...I thought I can use a tiller and till that slope down and level it out. I'm planning on renting a tiller anyway to do some re-landscaping in areas at the front of my house.

I thought I can start out with two 4x8 boxes and see what happens.

Does this mean that you plan on locating the garden to the north side of the structure we see here?

is this going to be in full sun? that would be my concern. You need lots of sun, and ideally put your trellis' (if you have them) on the north side of your boxes, so you don't shade your plants..

Yes.....the boxes will be on the north side of the house. It's really the only place to put them.
Anything that needs a trellis will go in the squares that would be closest to the garden shed. I've grown cherry tomatoes and cucumbers in that bed that you see along the shed and they always turn out really great. It probably not full sun but it's maybe around 6 hours. Sometime between now and early spring, I'm having a tree person come and cut out as much dead wood as possible from that oak tree, and that should let more sun through.

Six to eight hrs of sunshine a day is good for a garden so you should be OK.

Expect the sun angle in the early spring and late fall to hinder things a bit more than others in your area, though. But, you should be fine in the heart of your growing season. And, I bet you get cool season crops like broccoli, spinach, lettuce to hang on longer than most in your area, too. In fact, I'd be surprised if your lettuce bolted, especially if that oak helps dapple midday sunlight.

Well since I'm a little late getting started with SFG for this year, I'm going to plan on having it start in the spring. I'm going to at least rototill that incline down so that the SFG boxes sit flat. There's a garden center that my Mom and I go to and they always have a great supply of SFG products on display. With Christmas around the corner, I'm wondering if I can get ready-made boxes at a discount.
That oak tree does provide some cover from the sun....sometimes I think it might be too much but I know I've had success growing tomatoes and cucumbers in that bed next to the shed.
Sometime soon I'm going to have that tree man come and thin out the dead branches.

Compost those leaves! Use that dead wood and grow yourself some mushrooms too!

The spot sounds okay, knowing you've had success before makes it sound even better. And what BackyardBirdGardner said about using that spot to full advantage is good advice.

I would be afraid of those mushrooms not being the edible kind.

I have mushrooms sprouting on my lawn at this time of year. They look gross.



I have looked it up on the Internet and they are something to do with my birch trees. A symbiotic relationship.
