When do I buy strawberry plants?

I'm going to add a box of strawberries for next year. I know they take a while before they mature and produce, so I'm wondering - do I get a head start by ordering and planting them now, or wait until spring? I see Johnny's Seeds seems to be out of stock of them anyway (the Sparkle), so that clues me in that maybe you only order these in the spring... But just wanted to make sure.

I have not grown the variety you mentioned but here is some info. Looks like a spring planting thing. The company you buy them from will usually ship to you at your planting time.

LOL, the wee wild alpine strawberries. Maybe next year i may find a spot to put some cultivated berries. Wink

Well now you got me thinking, camprn. I hadn't thought about a smaller, wild version. Looking online, I see they make good ground covers. I'm wondering about using a small wild strawberry for a ground cover now.

Why are you going with the wild instead of the actual plant?

When we lived up in the Lakes region, our house had a really really tiny wild strawberry all over the lawn. We didn't even think they were edible, but I think they were. About the size of a fingernail, if that.

I think my alpine berry plants are the same, low growing and native wild plants. I did not plant them. the berries are very small but pretty delicious. Very Happy
