Red Leaves on Strawberry Plants

This is a picture of one of my strawberry plants. A few of my plants have these red leaves. Is this an indication of something wrong with the plant or is it normal. They were recently transplanted from a different bed.

I'd would also like to know what that is. Noticed the same thing on the bottom strawberry leaves closest to the soil.

All of my strawberry plants eventually develop these red leaves.

Mine have red leaves, too. And since I need glasses to see close up, and don't ever wear them in the garden, I think "Oh YUM! Breakfast!" only to find they are strawberry colored leaves... Rolling Eyes

Mine are in a table top so I know they are just leaves, that's kinda sad you are getting ready for a good tasting berry then...Not!

Hey I did a bunch of reading and there apparently is a terrible disease called red steele that affects strawberries, but I'm hoping its not what I have or what You have. I'm going to try adding fresh compost to see if more nutrition is the answer before I freak out. Also over watering may be a problem too. Both of these solutions were off the net so who knows???

Come to think of it...I don't think I've done anything with my strawberries since plopping them, peat pot & all, into the ground back in April.

Tonite I was eating strawberries the size of peas thinking "I need to give these some attention but I have no idea what they want". May as well have been eating the wild ones if I'm gonna eat pea sized ones. Fresh compost sounds like a good idea. I don't think I have an over watering problem tho...I seem to forget they are there most of the time.

I have to go to bed now. sawing logs

Ever since I started SFG, I bound out of bed and run out to the garden between 4 & 5 AM to see what's new. But please let me know what you find out about red steele.

Do the red leaves indicate that they are done for the season? We don't have any red leaves but they are pretty much done and I don't know what to do with them since they have finished.

if i'm not mistaken, red stele is actually a root disease, so you would see red in the crown first. red leaves on healthy strawberries are normal, at least in my experience, and as long as the plant appears healthy (vigorous, putting out new growth, not limp), the red leaves are nothing to worry about.

what type of strawberries are they? some only bear once per year, some bear twice, some bear across the seasons.

LOL, not sure what time zone you are in but it is 5:30 here.....
I do the same thing in the AM, perhaps a wee bit later.
I was heading out each day to see what the compost had gotten up to, but lately it is to see if the peppers have grown AT ALL....

I sure hope not since my season has not even started.
I have straw berries in my old garden, and several plants in my SFG garden. I found that the leaves were turning red in the Mels mix and so I have topped the whole area up with compost.

They are Ozark Beauties which are everbearer. We have been clipping the runners but not often enough which might explain the energy going to the runners vs. fruiting. So, now I'll keep a better eye on them(runners).

Now, as we go into spring next year and the plants come back, I will let the runners go and replant, right?

I have Toscan, Frisan, Quinalt, Sequia. The Toscan and Frisan are bearing now and the Quinalt and Sequia have strawberries setting on now but the berries are not red yet. The red leaves are on the Qunalt and Sequia.

My June bearing are earliglo, the everbearings are quinalts. I was thinking could it be a natural reaction to being shaded by the upper leaves? Ok probably wrong. Will add compost tomorrow.

My quinalts get red spots on the leaves!

i also grow ozark beauties (got them at aldi of all places). i don't prune off the runners, i let them go and when they root i detach them to make new plants.

in general, i'm not a pruner. i like to let things have their way as much as possible. i figure mother nature has been growing things a lot long than i have, so she is probably a lot smarter and wiser and has more experience getting things to harvest. Smile

I do like your way of thinking. Mine are cram-jammed into a tabletop. My limited experience of 64 plants in a 4x4 seems both efficient and a bit unnatural. But I can't argue with a couple hundred berries first time out. I want to let the runners go but I've been both snipping some off and today added what I call rooting cups. Or cups with Mel's mix letting runners settle in to be transferred later on.

I don't know what kind my strawberries are, some kind of June bearing. I can look for the tag during lunch break. I guess I should also look for runners and replant them. Don't know if there will be any runners tho since the bed is completely covered with mulch. I mean, where would they run to?

CaleCoddess, assuming you have not buried your plants completely, you will get runners. If they do not root in the mulch, no problem, they are being fed by the mother plant as long as the runner is attached. You could pot the runner into a small pot, secure by a pape clip or piece of wire, and leave it attached to mom until you are sure it is rooted. Very Happy

OK, I'll do that...thanks Jan. I didn't see runners yet...maybe it's too soon. And the variety is Allstar. They are June bearing and only go on for 2 or 3 weeks so I guess adding more compost won't make bigger berries. I have to say the berries were big and sweet from the end of May until a recently.
