Hey gang!

My first post here. I am about to launch into the world of SFG and after reading the book and watching the video I have a compost question that I hope you all can help with.

I live in Atlanta, GA and have access to Farmer D bio dynamic compost. It is pretty cool in that it comes from Whole Foods waste and byproducts from pine forests, cotton gins, peanuts, chicken litter, granite dust and biodynamic soil preparation.

I would think this would be a pretty rocking compost in and of itself as it is always different based on the discarded stuff from Whole Foods.

Would this only qualify as ONE of the five types of compost?

Also, if we were to decide to compost on our own (there are just two of us and our dog)... what SMALL composter would you all recommend? I have been doing some reading on the naturemill and it seems pretty cool but it also seems somewhat expensive.

Lastly, living in the city in a condo, I am not worried about rodents but I am worried about pests like ants and roaches with both my garden and the composter... any thoughts?

Thanks in advance for your replies!

Hi Yoel, FarmerD Compost and Composter for two urban people 396615 to the SFG Forum. I would count that as one source of compost. I cannot offer you any recommendations on a 'composter'. When I lived in my condo, I had a little 2x2x3 bin set off in a little corner of my patio garden as I had to keep it hidden. It did the job though.

Welcome fellow Atlantan! I was a bit shocked to see "FarmerD" in the thread title! Smile I also believe it would be considered 1 compost. I know of Farmer D's but haven't been there yet. I am curious, how much is the compost?

Welcome,

Yes 1 source, a reason to count it as one is some times you can get a compost that is a dud due to things like high temps, improper mixing and the like.

I am going to make a roll around composter from one of those food grade blue barrels you can make rain barrels from. There is only one of me so I think a 50gal barrel will work just fine. You can find instructions on youtube if you want to check it out.

How about vermicomposting for a small footprint composter? The worms probably won't survive outside in the summer, but the bins are small enough to fit indoors(I have one in the kitchen). They're finicky about what they want, however, so do some research first to see if it meets your needs.
