snails - think this will help?
I saw - eating tops off of new seedlings! grrrr - some snail damage and I went to get my snail bait (sorry kids - snails are too vicious here and way too plentiful). I was out. I was out of everything. Do not even have beer.
But I do have epsom salts. So I sprinkled liberally around the outside of the boxes and in the boxes themselves. What do you think? Caustic enough? Too much ES for the good of the soil/plants?

Re: snails - think this will help?
Well, I've read that epsom salt is beneficial to plants, but I would be cautious of using too much. Too much of anything is bad, after all.
I've been using coffee! Also, next year I'm going to buy copper tape. I know that copper works to deter slugs because I set up a border of pennies around the edge of my gardens last year. However, they're pennies, so they went everywhere! I was going to buy it this year, but decided to see what the gardens would be like without the copper barrier. Let's just say the slugs are happy.

Haha That's so mean and yet so hilarious. Those are some massive slugs though! I've never seen them that big!
Re: snails - think this will help?
They're average size for around here.
One benefit of TableTops is slug control. I've had one in five years, which disappoints my chickens!

Re: snails - think this will help?
Apparently the snails prefer beans with salt as they left only one and the others were all gone. Drat. However, next box I am definitely trying the rough velcro around the top trick and see how that works.
Beer
I have been told that beer helps. Put out a bit in a lid or saucer and they crawl in suck it up and can't get out. Thankfully haven't had the occasion to try it. Hope that works for you.

Re: snails - think this will help?
I lost a lot to slugs this year, several cabbages and all my lettuce. I have to figure out something for next year....beer did not work, Sluggo helped slightly but that stuff is expensive to have to add once a week...oye vay!
I don't really know what I will do next spring but I have to think of something....chickens would be the smartest thing...maybe....I have to figure out a few things before I make the chicken commitment.
