Snails Empty Snails

Post  arla 2/23/2012, 12:34 am

So I went out to get some lettuce from my garden last night (in the dark, it was after work) and, well, my lettuce had a couple of snails, no big deal, then my flashlight swept over my peas and there were about 3 dozen snails all over it.

Any good ways to limit snails in an SFG in a "I've got a 3 year old who eats dirt and kisses worms" friendly way?

Attach some COPPER tubing across their pathway to your square(s)!

Small dishes of cheap beer seems to be a well proven method. Just remember to dump the drowned snails before the kid gets to them.

Do all the above AND keep going out at night with your flashlight or head-lamp if you have one. Snails are nocturnal. We have slugs in the PNW so hand picking snails doesn't bother me so much, much nicer than hand picking slugs .....you can do a lot of damage to the population by picking them off at night, dropping them into a heavy duty plastic zipper bag with some salt and crushing them. If you do this at night you won't see how gross it is. Drop the bag in the trash.

Debs.....who gave up and bought a canister of sluggo. So much easier but I only have small dogs not 3 year olds.
