GREAT resource
Smart Gardener
Has anyone tried this? It's a free garden planning and tracking tool. I've been using it for a little while, and am SUPER impressed. You create your garden layout, add your plants, and they give you a to do list each week. They will also recommend layouts with the veggies you wish to plant, based on where north is, companion planting, and a 4-year rotation. My one little issue is that the amount of space recommended is bigger than what SFG recommends, so you have to adjust a little. But I've learned to manipulate it pretty well. It's quite awesome.

Re: GREAT resource
Hey, that sounds really cool! Sure beats spending two or three hours planning out my garding to-do calendar (and then forgetting to check it later). I'll certainly check it out. Thanks!
Re: GREAT resource
I love it! Thanks for the link! I have been playing on it for the last hour!

Re: GREAT resource
Good idea, htanguay! I set up my 2012 garden with it, but it's very messy looking because I had to stack some veggies on top of each other because the spacing is different from the SFG method. Like tomatoes taking up four squares?! Holy moly! The only way I can see tomatoes needing that much space is if they're A) determinate or B) not staked up!
Re: GREAT resource
Saved to my favorites to try out. Thank you.

Re: GREAT resource
I received a feedback email today from them...they said they may consider putting that in as an option or an upgrade.

Re: GREAT resource
I got halfway through with my garden and then after I selected my pole beans to be added the smart garden planner froze up or something. Hrs. later and I'm still unable to view my garden.

Re: GREAT resource
Anyone know how to plan succession crops or change the plants-per-square foot size?

Re: GREAT resource
My go at it finally.
I probably could have put more effort into this but I'm a busy gal.
I do love a lot about this website--Thanx for showing it to us.
You can do this...I changed mine. I just can't at this time remeber just which tab I went under.

Re: GREAT resource
I played a little bit, and found that you can create a new garden. I think that's what I'm going to do for my fall garden. Still playing, though. Maybe I'll find out how to do succession planting.
Re: GREAT resource
I left some input for them about how I'd like to see successive planting and more SFG options, and I got a reply back! They said that they plan on implimenting successive planting very soon!
And they asked some questions, too! Here's what they asked. Maybe you guys can help me figure out the best way to answer them.

1. What do you consider the best sources for data about how many plants per square feet for a thorough range of vegetables? I can find info for a standard range of plants but we need info for the whole set of plants we offer. Any leads would be helpful.
2. If we charged $10 a year for a Sq Ft. Garden Premium Feature, would you pay that? What's the right price point for the product?
Re: GREAT resource
Planting Spacing:
page 127, Mel says spacing is nothing more than using the 'thin to' numbers on the seed packages.
They could just use the simple formula:
12 divided by 'thin to' number, squared, equals planting per square foot.
Or
They could write themselves up a chart:
thin to: 3 inches=16 per square
thin to: 4 inches=9 per square
etc.
personally, not interested in paying.

Re: GREAT resource
I'd gladly pay 10 bucks for a whole year. Since I'm "young" in the garden, the reminders and helps are very useful.
