Looks nice JazzyMaddy

This suggestion is not due to an issue, but I find that crops I will be messing with a lot, such as frequent harvesting of lettuce and spinach, is easier if those are planted on an outside row.

Things that you let be for a longer time, like broccoli, carrots and potatoes, I try to plant in the middle where I won't be reaching through them to get to my faster growing crops. Plus broccoli and potatoes put out a whole lot of foliage. I would get them northish in placement, maybe in front of your vining crops, so they won't shade your smaller plants.

I would consider placing the tomato plant from the South side to the North Side.

And I know nothing about companion planting.

What a great tip. I will take that into consideration when I plant.

I agree. Great tip. I have made some adjustments based on that tip. The tomato is there from this season, and I don't know if I'm comfortable moving it. Has anyone had success moving mature plants? It would make companion planting easier. I don't know much about companion planting either, but I have been using this web site that lists bad companions for each of my plants. smartgardener.com It's aMAYzing. I've been meaning to recommend it here. Check it out.

Earlier this year someone recommended this site which has quite a bit of information on both good and bad companions:

JazzyMaddy, if that tomato on the South side has already been growing there during the Summer season, I would not try to transplant it. The transplant shock could set it back too long and interfere with what fruit has already set.

The only issue I see - and you may have already accounted for it - is that the potatoes need to have dirt mounded up around them as they grow. The potatoes actually grow from the stems so as the plant grows you mound the dirt so you can get a lot of potatoes. They are not like sweet potatoes that are tubers. That is why a lot of people choose to plant them in separate containers. I planted mine along the north end of the bed and added a high rise to accommodate the growth. Would be awkward to do the way you have it now.

Also, and I do not know your area and am too lazy to look it up, but are you sure it is not too late to plant tomatoes, watermelon, peppers and cukes? May not be. Just asking. I planted a tomato plant the other day here in So Cal but do not really hold out a lot of hope that I will see ripe tomatoes.

Hmmm. Maybe I'll have to do a separate potato planter. I'll look into that. Thanks for that insight. And the maters, cukes, et al are things that are still hanging on from my spring planting. So they will eventually be gone, but I'll plant around them for the time being. Good eyes.

I am going to plant mine in compost bags I have saved. I read where you wash, dry, and poke holes in the bags for drainage. Then roll down the sides. Add 4" soil,MM,compost, what ever. Plant 3-4 seed taters, and cover with another 2"-3" of MM. Then you keep adding "soil" and unrolling bag as they grow until you get to the top. Come harvest time just dump bag onto a tarp. No digging for taters.

changed my mind - NEW fall layout Empty Planting Potatoes in a bag

Post  deeasay 9/7/2011, 3:09 pm

Shannon what a great idea. I am going to try that next spring when I am planting my potatoes, but I think that I will use sweet potatoes in the bag and see how they turn out.

Thanks for the great idea!
