THIS WEEKEND HEAT ALERT for OHIO,IN,IL,etc.
Between Friday and Memorial Day the forcast for many of us is sunny and mid 90's. Consider shade strategy for tender plants. My boxes will be covered either with sheets or burlap. I just discovered rolls of lightweight burlap in the garden store, it comes in many different lengths and cuts like butter with scissors. Highly recommend it. Good Luck everyone!

Wow, it's going to be hotter there than it will be down here! I'm just grateful our humidity is still low. Usually it's like walking into a steam room when we step outside by this time of year... Of course, now that I think about it that's probably because our rainy season isn't happening like it should, so maybe I shouldn't be so grateful?
Anyway, hope you can pull your gardens through the heat and enjoy your holiday weekend!

Thanks! I have relatives in Sarasota and we can laugh when the temperatures are upside down like this. Here I always tell them I can't stand Florida's heat, couldn't live there...

I saw that also and I'm worried for my remaining broccoli. I'll make a makeshift tarp and try to shade them.

Well crap. I just transplanted the last of my peppers. They are still pretty small, although they were hardened off really well. Any ideas how to come up with a cheap/free shade solution? I'm worried about the little plants and my baby cukes and melons

Ugh! I don't know who is going down first me or the plants.....
90* is a bit high for me. I am not too worried for the plants though I really only have out summer crops right now. Oh wait I have peas and lettuce.....need to find Row Covers
I really want peas this year and I have about 50 pods that just started forming! looks like extra water for the plants this weekend.
Good luck everyone I hope we all survive the heat.

If they are well hardened off, then they will just need extra water. All of those things love heat.

It was around 90 degrees in kansas city today with strong, dry winds...my Mels Mix was bond dry for the first couple of inches...needed to water twice today to keep the green bean seeds moist.

The forcasters, or should say, The For-"Guessors" have lowered the weekend temperature outlook from 96 to hi 80's and 91.

But they changed it and it is 93 here now..... growl.
Unlike a lot of people I can't stand summers in Ohio. I favor the other seasons. Usually my gardening begins at dawn and is over usually by 9 or 10 am.

Was almost 90 today and tomorrow is supposed to be the same if not hotter. Just got a call from Donegal, Pa and they had heavy rain and wind but dry down here. Just watered my garden and perhaps again tomorrow if needed.
Brocolli looking nice though and hope it makes it through the heat..

Finished my trellises
Even though it is a scorcher today, with the help of my daughter and son-in-law, I got my trellises finished. Also put in the last of my plants from pots. By then it was starting to get dark, so I decided to let the camera go until tomorrow. I want to put in another square of radishes, and save the rest for later.

Sounds like you had a VERY produce day then and it is good to finally get everthing in the ground but one would not expect memorial day weekend to be so HOT...
Now I have been out attempting to kill Pill bugs which have taken over my garden and hopefully they will be gone in a couple of days.
Perhaps I got my compost pile to close to the garden?

Re: THIS WEEKEND HEAT ALERT for OHIO,IN,IL,etc.
llama momma, I hate the midwestern summers too. Humidity is my nemesis!

Re: THIS WEEKEND HEAT ALERT for OHIO,IN,IL,etc.
Yes, I hear you. Heat and humidity yuck. I never appreciated my childhood home of Long Island along the south shore with its summer breezes and lower temperatures. Coming to Ohio was a shocker, not only the oppressive heat that just hangs there but the thunder storms are far more vicious here too. You would think 33 years I'd be use to it by now. Nope.

Re: THIS WEEKEND HEAT ALERT for OHIO,IN,IL,etc.
I grew up on the gulf coast so this is dry in comparison but it is still horrible. If you're a "sweat-er" as I am, you never adjust to humidity! LOL
Re: THIS WEEKEND HEAT ALERT for OHIO,IN,IL,etc.
I am a "sweat-er" too. Summer is like one long menopausal hot flash.
