Pole Beans problem
Hi everyone,
I was hoping someone can help me with my Pole Beans.
They have been growing, growing and growing forever - up the trellis, over the trellis and going further down.
I noticed some leaves were turning yellow and now there are more and more.
I have been watering them once a day with this heat. There are no pods yet.
Any suggestions?
Thank you.

Re: Pole Beans problem
My pole beans are similar to yours. Mine have yellow/brown leaves on the bottom then I noticed wilted/dried up leaves at the top. I increased my watering and it has since improved. I planted mine in late May/Early June and have blooms galore. I did pick 5 beans last night, so they are coming , slowly but surely! I'm thinking of giving them a dose of Fish Emolsion.

Re: Pole Beans problem
Hi Kim:
I was thinking of adding some compost and water twice and day since it's been extremely hot - 100 degrees!
Thanks for your help.

Re: Pole Beans problem
I watered 3 times yesterday. The heat index hit 114, I just remember reading: You cannot over water a raised bed, so I went and watered!

Re: Pole Beans problem
My pole bean plants are also having yellowing and dying leaves at the base = normal. In the heat of the afternoon the foliage wilts but then recovers as the sun gets less intense = normal. Would you be able to post a photo of your beans?
Re: Pole Beans problem
I am so glad that you posted this. I was online for quite a while yesterday looking up the exact same thing---it doesn't look like any of the typical blights or diseases. I have my 15 foot long cattle panel of pole beans and they look horrible with leaves turning yellow from the bottom up. We had record breaking heat and humidity this past week. I didn't water during the two hottest days because we were literally water logged with 6 inches of rain leading up to the heat. I am hoping that it is just heat related. I haven't had this problem in the past. I figure I will go and fertilize today to give them a boost.

Re: Pole Beans problem
Most plants eventually lose their older lower leaves which turn yellow or brown. You can nip them off. It is just old age. Peas and beans I've found do this a lot.
Do NOT fertilize in such heat. Just water as needed and mulch with straw, dry grass or shredded leaves to keep soil temps lower. Save the composting/fertilizing for when temps are back to normal. You don't want your plants trying to suck up nutrients and trying to add new growth when they are having a hard enuf time just staying alive in abnormal temps.

Re: Pole Beans problem
Thankfully we are out of the heat spell for the moment. My yellow leaves go all the way up the plant. What's with that? And the plants were in full bloom. Should have beens starting today or tomorrow.

Re: Pole Beans problem
Maybe it is leaf hopper damage. Those little critters blend in very well to the bean vine and essentially suck the "juice" out of the leaves. They are little triangular bugs that are green and look just like the little joints where the leaves join the stem. I wish I had a picture but my camera died this year. They are the best camouflaged bugs in existence . I smoosh at least 5 or six every day on my bean plants. The leaves at first have small freckly brown spots and then the leaves turn yellow, dry out and drop.

Re: Pole Beans problem
My pole beans are getting the "freckles" then turning yellow and dropping, from the ground up, also. It's not happening quickly, just a leaf or 2 a day. I wondered why it was happening, but it has happened in the past, and really wasn't worried. My beans always produce, anyway. But now that you mention it, I do know I've had at least one leaf hopper, one of the rainbow variety. He was actually really pretty. I'd never seen that variety before and looked it up. Never checked for how they damage bean plants. I'll have to start looking more closely. How do you catch one to kill it? These buggers are FAST!
This is what mine looked like.

Re: Pole Beans problem
oh, those are pretty. The leaf hopper around here is the same shape although, maybe not quite as long. They are the exact color of the bean vine. They don't seem to necessarily hop when I am reaching for it. Instead he scoots around the vine to avoid my fingers. It is funny how he thinks he's getting away. I just block him and grab him quick and smoosh between my fingers (I have gloves on ) Every now and then one will best me by hopping but usually it's not too far and I can find him again.

Re: Pole Beans problem
I planted Pole Beans and Dragon Tongue Beans. I've been having DTB for the past couple of weeks and I got my first three pole beans today despite the fact that they have had flower buds for a while.
Not really helpful but hopefully giving you hope :o)

Re: Pole Beans problem
I have been inspecting the leaves and cannot find any bugs of any type on the pole bean leaves.
Campryn: I was going to add compost to the beans until I saw your post tonight not to add anything to the soil. Therefore, I will continue to water and increase to twice a day.
This is my first time growing pole beans so I have been worried since they were so green and lush, and now have been yellowing, turning brown and drop.
I have not seen any flowers yet. Could it be the stress of the heat?
Thanks everyone for your assistance!

Here are some pics of my Pole beans which are looking truly sad:
This is a pic of the upper portion of the pole bean plants:
This is a pic of the lower portion of the pole bean plants:
Close-up pics of leaves - not always very clear - sorry.
I am so sad since it was once so green and lush....
Thank you.

Re: Pole Beans problem
It could be mite damage. Check for webs and very small 8 legged critters. We get them quit often here in Utah.

If camprn is right, which I think he might be but I have no experience, I thought I'd look up some helpful info in The Organic Gardener's Handbook of Natural Pest and Disease Control. Powdery Mildew is characterized as looking like the plant was dusted by flour and it thrives in a hot climate with cool nights, low rain. It effects mostly new growth.
You can use potassium bicarbonate or make your own solution using 1 tsp baking soda to 1 quart water. Spray thoroughly. It can be used to prevent or control.
Best of luck!

I like that that's now displayed for those of us who choose to share that info, though I do find it amazing how often I can guess whether it's a man or a woman just by the way they write!
