Hello!

I am not sure what happened, but i planted a healthy looking cucumber plant on monday and now the leaves are all shriveled up and limp and there is only really the stem left. This was planted in the new box and MM i built and completed this past weekend.. It is no longer the dark healthy looking green, rather it is light green now. Is it a goner?

We have had rain tuesday and today and little sun.

Simular problem with the cantalope in the square nearby, but that one looks like it might still live.

What do i do?

I didn't have luck with cucumber last year, likely do to the planter they were in. It seems cursed. But I read to protect them on cool nights. I used half a soda/pop bottle to keep them warn.

Cukes do NOT like to be transplanted...I learned this after 3 sets last year. Some people have the touch..I do not!

I stuck seeds in the ground and away we went!

I echo Middlemamma, cukes don't transplant well. KP, it's not too late in your area, sow some seeds and you will have cucumber plants by next week. Very Happy

Cucumber plant planted on monday practically dead on wed. Empty That makes sense

Post  kputikka Thu Jun 16, 2011 10:03 am

I had transplanted cucumbers last year and they died off too. but with my first garden 3 summers ago, i planted seeds and had cucumbers galore.

I will plant seeds again then. I have had all my plants on the screen porch since mohters day so i think they are hardened off enough...

Thanks for the help!

If I am seduced by cucumber PLANTS I over plant hoping that I get at least 1 plant to live. I do ok with soil blocks of cucumber IF I put them into soil before there is much root showing. Even so, they are slower to take off than direct planted seed.

BTW, for some reason lemon cucumber plants do OK for me.

I'm another who doesn't waste time or space or supplies on starting cucumbers. Too much trouble when all you have to do is sow the seeds directly into the warm soil and voila, in 3-6 days you've got cukes popping up.

If you are going to have a cold nite, just invert a 2-litre soda bottle (bottom cut off) over the plants (or the seeded space) with the cap on to retain the heat. Do this before suppertime so some of the heat is saved inside the bottle.

Don't forget to remove it in the morning when the sun comes up or at least remove the cap if the day is not going to be very warm.

My cuke starts took off in the house, then promptly died when I put them outdoors - something about 50 mph wind will kill a seedling even with good hardening off! affraid But, when I went to get replacements at the nursery I was informed they only had pickling cukes left, no slicers. I bought them and some day lilies, and the owner came up to me while I was checking out and handed me a little coin envelope of Straight Eight seeds and said "The ground is nice and warm now, these will come right up for you". Cucumber plant planted on monday practically dead on wed. 832433 They start most of their veggie and flower seedlings right there.

She was right - as of 2 days ago I have new little cuke seedlings that are fighting the peas for space and sunshine.

It difficult to get a healthy cuke plant from a transplant. They hate having their roots disturbed even the slightest so one must be ultra careful when transplanting.
Easier to just sow a few seeds a couple weeks after last frost date.

I just planted some cuke and squash seeds. It's late but the season is long here, I figure I have plenty of time. Planted them on Sunday evening, they started sprouting on Thurs. morning and I now have 5 cucumber sprouts poking up. I haven't had home-grown cucumbers since I was a kid, but I am looking forward to it. The home I grew up in (Long Island, NY) backed up to an elementary school and had a chain link fence in the back; that fence was Mom's trellis and I remember going out there and picking cukes while still fairly small -- and how much better they were than any of the overgrown ones we would get from the store.

All this to echo what everyone else said -- just start over and put in some seeds :-)

Well...I'm glad I transplanted my cukes before I read this thread. All 8 are doing great! I've planted some seeds in the ground twice now, and they are a no-show.

Ignorance is bliss, I guess.

I don't know anything about western Washington but over here in Eastern Washington and the Idaho panhandle we are just too cold still for cukes to grow. Mine are kinda standing still as well.

Sucky...

Highs in upper 50's lows in the mid 40's. Way weird weather for this time of year. We had a couple beautiful weeks a few weeks ago, but reverted back tot he cold wet drizzly grey spring weather.

It's the weather. It sounds like you are at where I was at last year: I couldn't get cukes or squash going for anything. That's why I got serious about a heated hoop house and using it as a germination bed. I'm guessing my transplants did well because I germinated them in MM in a SFG box. I was able to use both hands to scoop up as much MM as possible so as not to disturb the roots. I didn't harden them off; I figured that being in a hoop house was kinda outside.

The transplants sat there for a couple weeks doing nothing, but have finally taken off cheers

I concur boffer. All of my transplants but one are in great shape. When I initially transplanted them, I thought they were all goners. But just one died and the rest perked up really nicely.

I did some seeds in one of the pots I got my plants in when I thought they were all going to die and then I transplanted one in the ground to replace the dead one and two into buckets. The bucket cukes are growing slowly, but they're growing.

My Mother said that she spoke to someone who gets perfect cucumbers every year, and he says he transplants on June 13 every year. I had already put mine in the ground and the one I planted to replace the dead one I put in on June 12 (I thought it was the 13th). Anyway I woke up to some really nice flowers on the cucumbers this morning, so I guess all is well. Even one that was little more than a stem has made a comeback.
