Cicada hole? How big is the hole. Ive seen those when its Cicada time here in my garden.
Ha-v-v
Son is asking how big the hole is as well. He says he has seen mouse holes look like that. Cicada holes he said go straight down, no curves.

Re: Anybody recognize this hole?
Can't really decide how big it is but around her it would look like a chipmunk/ground squirrel hole. If its them there will be more than one entrance to the castle usually in a 20 ft radius or so. They are not nocturnal as I think a mole is so you will see them sooner or later. Chewing gum takes care of moles around here. For chipmunks we use peanuts in the shell to keep them happily visiting and entertaining us.

Do you have any ducks?
I had my pond ducks in my garden a while back, they made holes similar in my garden. I dashed out to buy netting. They did not eat any veggies, just the snails and bugs. They even got in with new green beans and ate the slugs.

Not sure, but making me thankful I spent the extra money that pained me last year to put hardware wire on the bottom of all my boxes. Have any of your plants been nibbled?

If that hole was around here my guess would be Gopher. Do you have gophers there?

It's such a perfectly round hole that it looks like you had a peat plug in there that got ripped out by something!

Re: Anybody recognize this hole?
I have seen these holes. Mine were caused by voles (field mice). You might not be able to tell now that your plants are mature, but they will eat the roots of your plants and multiply quickly.
see this post, and the photos of the same holes.

Re: Anybody recognize this hole?
We have a lot of chipmunk holes around here that look like that.
I sure hope we don't get those in the garden. We have a lot of field mice around here too. Of course, the snakes do some population control. The hawks. My chickens. Hopefully everyone will keep everyone else so busy chasing around this place that they won't notice my nice garden boxes with the beautiful leafy sprouting things in there...

Re: Anybody recognize this hole?
Thank you for all your responses. I read the post on field mice, and I'm really hoping it isn't them. I haven't seen any tunneling, so I don't think they are moles. And yes, there is another hole - surprise - about 4 feet away on the outside of my box. That hole was there when I built my boxes. The holes are 2-3 inches wide and has a curve. I put a small rock in front on the hole in my box. I may regret that move.

holes and moles
Also, I noticed Harbor Freight has a mole "repellent" that is solar battery powered (?) The lady in front of me was buying them and said they worked pretty well. Does anyone else know about them?

Re: Anybody recognize this hole?
If they are chipmunks your ripe tomatoes will have one small toothy bite from each one they decide to sample. I slice that small divot out or just ignore and eat it away. The munks are so cute and entertaining almost as relaxing as watching a fish tank. It is not possible for me to discourage them considering so very little damage they do to me and the healthful smile they cause thru out me. If they are around and you can't see them you mite hear them buy their little call which is a lower drum or smacking cluck noise. A good case for chicken mesh on the bottoms of the boxes whatever your visitor is.

Re: Anybody recognize this hole?
My guess is chipmunks.
Moles, as you stated, have tunnels of raised earth and rarely come above ground. Their "air holes" are generally conical in nature and can get rather big. If you had a mole, you'd know it.
Voles look like Squat's post. But, they run in "channels." These are also visible and easy to spot. They look like 2 inch wide pathways running right through your grass...and not in a straight line....they are really random looking.
Chipmunks only have holes. No tunnels, channels.....or chunnels (LOL). They just dig a hole, or live in your downspouts. And, they burrow relentlessly. I've seen them cause "settling" problems in patios and sidewalks.
There are too many "organic" people around here to tell you all the things I've done to moles and chipmunks. But, Lowe's sells poison peanuts that are about your best deterrent w/o hiring a professional. Get him now before Dale shows up, too. That garden will prove very tasty to them. The best "natural" deterrent is a Garter Snake, but those aren't all that trainable to stay home and guard the SFG. But, every time I ever saw a snake, I didn't see moles for the rest of the year.
