Jacksonville, FL (Westside)
Hi everyone Just getting started 61949
I'm just getting started in SFG. I have a large backyard and wanted to decrease the amount of mowing I have to do..

I'm using 1 x 6 corral boards for my 4 x 4 frames.
Been able to get all the parts for MEL Mix and have started 1 4 x 4 using it..
I have 2 4 x 8 boxes with a mix using parts of the SFG mix..
Thus far I have tomatoes, beans, cucumbers, egg plant, squash, hot pepper & sweet pepper going.

The biggest issue I have is knowing what to plant and when - Does anyone have any tips on that..
As I said, I'm new in gardening so any help would be great!!

Thanks! Just getting started 27650

This is the online planting calendar that I use. I like that it has sort of a sliding scale rather than saying there is one exact date for things. For my zone, it is also helpful that it has recommendations for starting indoors and transplanting. I also like that it has info for both spring and fall planting. Just click on your zone.

Very nice. Florida has a rather specific set of challenges. I would go online and look for something local because of your heat. You may have to adjust compared to even us in California. But it is likely you can grow things all year round.

You've come to the right place for help. But, the best source of what to plant and when is your book....All New Square Foot Gardening. If you don't have one, it's the single best investment you will make in your SFG.....vermiculite included. That book has some very simple charts in it with a timeline based on your frost date, both spring and fall, that will give you a great starting point in planning both planting and harvesting.

As for other advice, that's what we are here for. Don't be a stranger!! Great pics by the way. Very nice setup. Welcome aboard!!

Thanks for all the input and well wishes.. I'm having some problems with my tomatoes, I tried to use the "soap & water" DIY insect juice but think I put to much soap.. I'll have to see if they survive..

Another good resource is the Duval county ag. extension office here is a link to their web site http://duval.ifas.ufl.edu/ and their phone number is 904-387-8850 they will have a list not only of what to plant when but which variety of each vegie grows best. I use the one in my county all the time. A great bunch of folks, and now they are learning more about SFG Wink .

I went down to the Aug office -- All the master gardner said was "you can get the info of the website".
He didn't really seem that he wanted to help..

Oh well -- Google it is... lol!

Pete, it is too bad you got that type of attitude from the MG. In our state, Master Gardeners are volunteers who provide information to the residents of the county. If they are on duty, they have a duty to help you. Just getting started 601593 I just don't understand that response or attitude.

I hope you got a chance to try the link Shannon provided.

Gee I'm sorry he was not better help. The ag agent I am sure would like to know how you were treated. Master gardeners are required to voulnteer I guess that one needs more hours added to his requirement as punishment. Twisted Evil Shame on him.
