New in NY...Hi all
I was recently given the SFG book (1st edition) and it has me very excited!!! I know I'm starting a little late but I'm hoping to get 2 blocks in this weekend. Right now I'm working on finding all the soil additives and figuring out exactly what I need and where to get it. This should be fun!!!

Roxy, Welcome to the Forum from California! Was the book Mel's original concept using amended dirt? Or the All New Square Foot Gardening where no dirt is used? There are 2 editions of ANSFG, which is why I ask.

Re: New in NY...Hi all
Hi Sanderson. I have the 2005 book...so I'm guessing I'm starting out of date already lol. Reading it just got me so excited. It makes so much sense. Maybe I got too excited and am rushing? I looked on amazon and see there is a newer version. I'm really hoping to get started but maybe I need to slow down a bit.sanderson wrote:Roxy, Welcome to the Forum from California! Re: New in NY...Hi all
I should add that I plan on starting with seedlings this year instead of seeds because of my late start.

Re: New in NY...Hi all
Welcome to the forums, from New Brunswick Canada.
I'm glad you're here, however before you get too crazy getting everything you need in the eagerness to garden, you should know that based on the date you provided, it looks as if you may have the original Square Foot Gardening book.
It has been GREATLY updated since then. Much has been changed and simplified. Simple is better right? If at all possible, I'd try to get my hands on the All New Square Foot Gardening 2nd Edition book. It may save you MUCH frustration and time. It was published in 2013. All New Square Foot Gardening 2nd Edition @ Barnes and Noble
It may even be available at your local public library.

Welcome to the forum, Roxy! In Rochester, the lake should give you more moderate temperatures for gardening than if you were at the same latitude elsewhere. (It's to balance out that crazy lake effect snow!)

Re: New in NY...Hi all
Yea I'll get the new book. It's just so exciting. I grew on mostly self sustaining farm but That was a long time ago I live the burbs now and have physical limits with my body so I feel like sfg is a great find for . I want to grow mostly for me and bit for Mom. I plan to grow tomatoes, corn, beans, greens, peppers (hot and bell), and herbs. I figure 2 blocks this year and you never know laterAtlantaMarie wrote:Hi Roxy. Welcome from Atlanta, GA!

Re: New in NY...Hi all
My family had a garden, and while it was decades between then and when I started gardening, I still have a problem: I automatically start to try to pull out the big plants. But with SFG the big plants are the vegetables, NOT the weeds! It used to be the other way around...Roxystargazer wrote: I grew on mostly self sustaining farm but That was a long time ago

Re: New in NY...Hi all
If your 2005 book looks like this, it is the old method. The 1st printing of the 1st Edition of All New Square Foot Gardening (ANSFG) was 2006, though copyrighted 2005.
Re: New in NY...Hi all
This is my go to book. This year I have amended my soil in the greenhouse by adding perlite to get a lighter mix. If you have good soil to start with it is much easier and cheaper to not have to make Mel's Mix.sanderson wrote:If your 2005 book looks like this, it is the old method.
I don't want to be confusing but you shouldn't get pushed too fast into the newest version.

I'm started
So the new book wasn't available but I found Mel's recipe. I admit I left some of my soil in the mix to be a bit more cost effective and honestly the plants I grew last year without amendments did great.
I'm blown away at how much you can plant and how incredible it looks!!!! I have corn, broccoli, cauliflower, bush beans, melon, cucumber, tomatoes, mescalin, spinach, red sail, romaine, and peppers. I'm going to be eating soooo good!!!
Thanks everyone!!
