Baltimore Oriole!

Saw a flash of orange go by the window this morning... it was a Baltimore Oriole! Not something we see often around here. I had to sneak a picture by hiding beside the slider and just sticking the camera out to take the shot. I just checked my pictures and realized it wasn't just the male, but the female was there, too! I didn't see her when I took the picture. Nice surprise.

Love it! I am hoping to see one this year over here. But, it's hard to put orange slices out to a "possibility." Suet may be the trick.

Is there something special in there? It it a fruit and nut blend?

WOWIE! Thanks for sharing. I'm just south of Baltimore and the only Baltimore Orioles I've seen are baseball players.

Some of the Oldtimers from around here swear we used to get Orioles here every year, but after the Dutch elm blight, their preferred high nesting sights were gone. Sad

I just checked to see which suet I used. It's called Peanut Dough. Ingredients are beef suet, peanuts, corn and oats. I thought it might be one called Berry-something. But it's not... I smelled it and it's definitely the peanut butter suet. Birds love this stuff. I like it because it's the "no melt" kind and my dogs love it... so any scraps that the birds flick onto the deck my dogs clean up. Baltimore Oriole! 91

Oh yeah... if you have a Christmas Tree Shoppe near you, I got the suet there for 89 cents.

Orioles love nectar too. Try putting out some orange slices or a humming bird feeder.

Just wanted to post an update.... so far, "my" orioles are still here. They're feeding on sunflower seeds, from my hummingbird feeder (crafty devils can hang upside down!), on oranges AND I found an oriole feeder (like a hummingbird feeder, but orange and it has a place for the orioles to land). Oh, they're still after the peanut dough suet. I HOPE they're nesting nearby!! Between the gardens and the birds, the inside of my house looks like a train wreck. Company coming tomorrow... so part of today will HAVE to be spent on housework. Boo HISS! Baltimore Oriole! 4u2ap3b

I saw my first-ever Oriole during the last flood. He was simply gorgeous! So the following weekend I went to Wild Birds Unlimited and bought an oriole feeder. I put diluted nectar in the bottom and grape jelly in the top. I also stab an orange half on the hanger. I have yet to see one at the house. The garden is about a mile from my house and they might not travel up to me. But I'm hopeful and I keep looking for them. I'm completely infatuated!

we have around 4 males and a few females jus showed up outta the blue one day so other half sent me to store to buy oranges. so i cut them in half push them on a couple of shepards hooks after they get bout half ate i fill them with grape jelly. never saw one in my life till these showed up. where i grew up in ohio all we ever saw was robins,cardenals and bluejays maybe a few sparrows. up here in michigan is a whole nother world bird wise.

I had a guy (in a store) tell me that the Orioles don't feed on oranges until they're nesting. I don't know if that's true or not. I hope it is... it means "my" birds are nesting nearby! I wonder if they like water, Nancy? You saw them when you had that flood... and I live on a large stream. Maybe?

Great shots Boog! Thanks for sharing them! I'm afraid the one I saw was just passing through. I will continue to try and feed them though. They are truly spectcular birds! Thanks for starting us on this, Tril!!

Hi All--

After seeing one fly through the yard last summer we decided to try to lure them back this year. The trick? grape jelly in a little bowl. We put this out and were rewarded with several families within a day or two and they are still around. Wild Birds Unlimited sells a bright orange feeder (simply a holder for a cup) that clips to your feeder pole. I recommend it!

I didn't have any regular grape jelly, just sugar free... so I filled the empty orange cups with orange marmelade. They love it.

We don't get Baltimore Orioles here in So CA but we saw our first Hooded Orioles of the season at the humming bird feeder yesterday. We usually will now see them til august then they migrate elsewhere.
