Hi, from Baltimore
Hi everyone,
I'm from Baltimore Maryland and relatively new at this. I did build a square foot garden late in the summer last year, but didn't really use it. This summer I'm ready to use it! I'm trying to find more of the Mel's Mix soil to fill up the beds a little bit, but can't find it this year anywhere. Last year I bought it at Home Depot. Does anyone know if this is still available to buy?

Re: Hi, from Baltimore
Melba. from Northern California. I also bought Mel's Mix from Home Depot last year, but now I'm using what Mel calls "the humanitarian method" which means using whatever you have. We live on a farm, so I have enough leaves, rabbit poo, wood chips, goat manure, & chicken manure, plus yard and kitchen scraps, to fill up my beds. Maybe someone else can help you find it, since it doesn't look like Home Depot carries it anymore.

Hi, Melba, Welcome to the Forum from California!
Try Veteran's Compost. I wish we had a location in California. https://www.veterancompost.com/pick-up-site-info/

Melbax3,
Welcome to the best forum on the WWW. We have the nicest, most helpful members, but we do have one minor obsession - Pictures. So please post photos of what you built. I know I love to see the before, during and after of an SFG.
If you cannot find the premixed Mel's mix, you can make your own. 1/3 Peat Moss, 1/3 Coarse Vermiculite, and 1/3 blended compost. Usually what most of us stuggle with is getting 5 sources of compost for the blended compost.
BTW - Do you have the SFG book?

Veteran Compost is located in Aberdeen, not too far of a drive from Baltimore. $9 for a cubic foot bag. Expensive, but convenient, and good.

Re: Hi, from Baltimore
I think our Kim Roman (a veteran herself, aka sfg4ukim) worked with the company so they could make Mel's Mix.

Hey Melba and Welcome! I'm your neighbor in Glen Burnie. Mike Baker is right, Veteran Compost has AWESOME compost AND they make Square Foot Gardening mix that Mel approved. VC also delivers bulk materials.

I have seen women looking at jewelry ads with a misty eye and one hand resting on the heart, and I only know what they're feeling because that's how I read the seed catalogs in January - Barbara Kingsolver - Animal, Vegetable, Miracle
