Herbicide

OK... I haven't lost my cool yet but I'm close.. Sunday I see my neighbor ( who doesn't care for my garden.. he goes in for the manicured grass) walking around with his hand held sprayer spot spraying weeds. Monday my loaded tomato plants are wilted. Today they are brown. Looks a lot like Roundup to me. There was negligible wind that day and he was holding the spray wand down close to the ground. There should not have been any drift.
I appreciate any feedback here. I am not happy... Evil or Very Mad

Well.. here's an update.. So far the only plants affected are the tomatos, and the parts of the plants farthest away from his side of the yard are still green and upright. So I'm thinking (hoping) that this was just drift and not deliberate. I really hope it doesn't happen again. Evil or Very Mad

If it does I might be forced to put up some really tacky plastic curtain to keep his toxic chemicals out !! Twisted Evil

Can you ask your neighbor to alert you next time before he/she sprays so you can cover you nearby plantings?

I had this problem with a farmer was spraying a soybean field. It's at least 400 yards away, but I guess the wind was just right... My plants did come back. I was very surprised, because they were very droopy for a week.

Shannon, this guy made some tacky comments when my husband was constructing the boxes. He obviously didn't like them, altho the boxes look just like a lot of others in the area that are planted with shrubs and flowers. He goes in for the manicured grass look. I've shared veggies with them, thinking that was the best way to stave off any complaints. I saw him spot spraying, there just wasn't any need for spraying near my beds.
Squat, I'm hoping thats what happens here.. I still have some green on the plant portions that are farthest away from his yard.
I'm thinking maybe next season I will plant a snap-pea "curtain" between my veggies and his grass... tongue

Well.. I went ahead and pulled up one of the tomato plants today. It didn't have any live leaves left. I cut it back to the first trunk branch and replanted it, we'll see if it puts back out..

Wow. I sure hope it wasn't deliberate. It doesn't sound like it, since it seemed to hit from the side. Shocked

It bugs me when people have a problem with you putting in a garden, or doing pretty much anything on you property. It's one thing if you're creating a rat haven, which is a public health issue. It's another thing when you're putting in a garden or a treehouse.

When he leaves for a day, go dump fertilizer in a pattern on his yard. I know someone in construction that wrote a dirty message in someone's yard with laquer thinner. I'm just kidding of course, but thinking about it may make you feel better.

Well as I pulled into the drive after work today, I see my neighbor trotting along the property line
with his broadcast spreader, some kind of granular stuff. He immediately went into his garage and closed the door before I could ask him what he was broadcasting. I really hope my second round of tomato plants don't shrivel up and die !!

What is his problem with a garden. A garden looks so much nicer than a yard that is just left to grow with weeds and overgrown grass. My neighbour is a young divorced guy who mows the grass once or twice each summer. He has friends over and they sit around in the back yard and leave their beer cans and pizza boxes lying around for weeks at a time. Makes me prefer my neighbour, even if he is a bit of a slob.

Yup! People are weird. And mean sometimes.

I think I might check into putting up one of those security surveillance cameras and positioning it to film the garden. Maybe you could rent one temporarily, though I have no idea what it would cost. Then, at least, you'd find out if he's messing around your garden and have the proof if so. Evil or Very Mad

Or maybe you could put a fake one up that he can see and make him think twice about messing with the garden again.

How ridiculous would it be if you had to call the cops over him killing your garden.?

You could have him up on trespassing and vandalism charges.

I hope it wasn't intentional.
Garden chemicals can volatize when used in hot weather. I have heard of weedkillers killing vinyards that were some distance away.
Many people don't follow directions on the package.
From http://www.monarchnurseries.com/faq.html: After 85o Round-Up can volatize - turn into a mist and drift onto green vegetation that want
to live. Round-Up is a non selective herbicide which means it kills anything green it comes into contact with.
