Vinyl Fencing Advice
I'm in the initial planning phase but hoping to move fairly quickly as Spring is on the way in the Rockies. As my beds will be prominate in my front yard I am considering using vinyl fencing. It will cost a bit more but last forever and will make my neighbor happy as it will be very visible from his front porch. The construction seems pretty doable. Anyone out there use vinyl fencing before and have a cautionary tale?

depending on your soil will dpend on how it needs to be anchored to the ground down here everyone uses concrete in the holse because the soil is so sandy and loose it holds up very well though make sure you have your pieces locked together tight only bad thing ive seen with it is that dogs like to chew on it for some reason other then that my exp with it is very limited

Re: Vinyl Fencing Advice
Choksaw, thanks for the feedback. Hmmm, I wasn't planning on anchoring them at all. I was basing my design concept on the Vinyl Garden Box kits available on the website. It looks to me like they just screw together using corner brackets and sit directly on the ground with weed block below. Am I missing something? I found 16' vinyl fence rails at Home Depot for under $16 each. They were heavier than I expected so I think the quality if pretty good. I would say weight wise they are comprable with 1x wood boards. I could get fancy and use 4x4 post sections (cut to short length) for the corner connections and cap them or angle iron Haven't decided yet.

Thanks for the advice. I had considered the grass situation and was thinking about something different between the beds. I use pea gravel in by flower beds which are across the driveway from where I am putting my SFG beds. Planning to run it past my neighbor to see what he thinks as I will be right on the property line.

No To the Vinyl
I live in Great Falls. The issue with the vinyl is the extremes in temps we get. It makes the vinyl a bit brittle. What you want to use is the Composite Decking Lumber. It comes in various sizes and once its screwed together, there is no need to paint, scrape, replace, or anything. This stuff works GREAT and lasts forever...

Re: Vinyl Fencing Advice
Theolan,
I’m very familiar with composite decking. I replaced my back deck two years ago with Trex. It was easy to work with and looks great but was VERY expensive. By my calculations it would cost 2 ½ times as much as the vinyl. I also think they have come a long way with the vinyl. The product I am looking at is much more substantial then I expected. I remember a friend put up a vinyl fence when they first came out and it looked terrible within a few years. This product looks completely different. But, I appreciate your advice and will take it under advisement as I develop my plan.
