another trellis question - Page 2 88662 Ahhh, so sneaky, Jeannie Beannie! Any excuse to get to add another sfg box, I'm gonna have to remember to have something go "wrong" with one of mine that can only be fixed by adding a new one! Best of luck with your gardening!

Okay, so for those of us still struggling with the problem, and not able to build a new box just yet, Smile do you all have any more suggestions? I've done tons of research on this one, and can't quite find an answer that will solve my issue. My box has a covered wagon covered with netting for the animals (soon to be tulle for the bugs), and the full 8' length will eventually have a trellis (sooner than later as I've got some maters that're getting serious). Do I just have to drape the whole thing in the tulle, or has some brilliant engineer figured this one out? I'm ALL about stealing, er using, brilliant people's ideas. Believe me, if I ever have an original gardening thought, I'll definitely let you all know!

Here's my box, and again, the trellis will be on the north side, which is the long side - the right side of the picture. I want it to be like acara's picture with the plastic lattice panel (i.e. brilliant person whose idea I'm stealing... thanks man!).

Thanks in advance for your help!

Run a piece of lathing along the grid line one square in and use that to hold the pvc up (end ones could have holders like you already use , cover hoops with nylon netting (tulle) held in place with jumbo binder clips. That frees the trellised squares. They will not be under netting. Although they could be if you take additional netting, clipped to the lathe and run it up and over the trellis, down the back. That would take a lot of tulle.

I was in a hurry (had to leave town) when I set this up and I need to support the hoop better.

Thanks Kay. I saw your idea on another thread, and have given it some thought, but worry about trying to cram my PVCs into the space of 3 squares instead of 4. Would the tension not knock the piece of lathing out? If not, we may be on to something.

I don't even have lathe. My grid is a piece of woven strapping and the hoop is standing up pretty good with no real support. We had some wicked winds lately too. But I do want to put a support bracket inside the bed for the pvc. But my hoop is still going across 4 squares so not as much tension as the 3 you would have available.

another trellis question - Page 2 Empty I think I have a solution for my particular garden setup

Post  walshevak 4/26/2011, 10:09 am

Ok, remember the problem was getting a trellis big enough to actually hold the tomatos, strong enough to hold the watermelons and low enough that I would not court a broken hip. I had planned to have 8' high poles and use a step stool, but procrastination was my friend this time. I SHAMELESSLY STOLE THE CANTALEVERED TRELLIS IDEA. The installation is not completed, but what do you think. Rebar at an angle in the ground, straps to the 4x4 "shelf" supports, and extra block for support. After I attach the top piece to the angled uprights and attach the netting. the trellis area will be about 6 1/2 feet, high enough to walk under and low enough for me to reach without a stool. I may also help another problem of having to put 2 trellis on the south side and reduce the shade effect. I welcome any suggestions before I start pounding rebar.

Brilliant! cheers

I would try it without the extra cinder block support at first. I don't like the way the block just sits there unsecured.

Ok, I'll use the blocks as a guide for the angle and see if the straps on the 4x4's will be enough support. The blocks can always be added later if the melon get too heavy. But I'm so happy to not have to climb.

Climbing in a garden is not a good thing!

Once it is built, I'm thinking a support post made of EMT, in place of the cinder block support, would be the way to go. I'm still thinking about how to best attach the post to the trellis, at whatever angle it ends up being...hmmm
