new here, just recently bought the SFG book and I'm building some boxes

I am building two 4x2 boxes to put up against a fence for vertical crops and I had a question on the trellis (I just ordered the netting)...

I am wondering if I can attach it to the fence somehow instead of building poles to hook it on...I suppose the main concern is it probably wouldn't be good for it to be laying against the fence completely so I would need some way to get some space there. Any tips would be appreciated.

Also, reading through the forum I have a few questions on the spacing...I see some people saying they are doing squash in 1 square but the book says 2 squares per 1 squash...I'm assuming I would use two horizontal squares on my 4x2 box because they space out so much up the trellis...and then I could plant something on the front square...is that correct? Also, we wanted to do watermelon and cantaloupe which are also 1 per 2 squares, do they need some sort of extra support on the trellis?

Lastly, no mention of garlic spacing in the book, has anyone had any success with garlic?

Welcome. Vining squash and melons are all planted 1 per two squares. I don't need extra support for Israeli melons or spaghetti squash, but if you grow watermelon, you'd probably need to diaper it.

I grow garlic. Mel suggests 4 per square, but I plant it one per as garlic is usually planted 12 - 15" apart. Here's Mel's directions: http://www.squarefootgardening.com/qnastart
click on plants and herbs, then garlic. Yeah, I know, really cumbersome, but hopefully the web gurus will put up an easier to navigate website in the future.

thx, I thought it would be in the book since I just bought it recently and it is the new one but apparently it didn't make it in there or maybe not a lot of people are interested in garlic, at least they have a website they can post updated info to and forums are always a great source of info Smile
