Wood Lath ! $$$ Empty Wood Lath ! $$$

Post  retired member 2 3/26/2011, 9:46 pm

Man did I get a shock today! Went to HD to buy wood lath for my gird. The sticker on the display said .72 so I pulled out 4 14 ft pieces. Waited patiently at the cutting area and no one ever showed up, so my husband cut them for me into 4 ft. lengths. Got to the check out and the .72 was a FOOT not a piece! It was $40.00 all together. I am glad that I had extra $ budgeted for my beds, but this really ticked me off. I think they need to be a litle clearer in their pricing. Meanwhile, I've got some REALLY nice lath. Sad

Oh my gosh!! I think you might have gotten the wrong thing. I got mine from HD in 4ft precut lengths for 29cents a piece. They also came in large bundles of 50 or 100, I didn't stick around to get the exact count, for $11.

Oh no.... My husband and I have both worked for big box stores, I am not really familiar with the building materials section, I worked the other side, but it really does sound like you got something definitely NOT lath. (I'd ask DH but he's asleep, sorry.) Glad you had some extra in the budget. I'm sure it smarts right now but maybe you'll be able to laugh about it later.

Are you sure they didn't ring it up wrong? I think I would still call back and let them know that it was marked as .72. I have never heard of them marking it per foot like that when it is in one piece.

Lath shouldn't be even $0.72 per piece.

That is very expensive, I paid 29 cents each for 4 foot pieces. I am wondering if your purchase was cedar or redwood? Even a standard 1"x2"x8' is 79 cents a piece in Portland, OR. It may be worth a trip back to the store with the receipt to make sure you were not overcharged for what you purchased.

The guy who rung me up was very sympathetic. He said that before he worked there, he bought something from them that was priced like that too. He said they really needed to be cleaarer in their pricing. I am sending an email of complaint to the company.

I would definately call them. I bought my lath from HD and it was dirt cheap. Don't remember exactly what it cost but i think it was around 20cents a foot or so. I remember it being rung up and saying..wow that's cheep. You may have grabbed some trim or have been rung up for some trim since they usually keep them right next to each other.

I had a hard time finding cheap lath at Lowes too. I ended up not buying it because a 4' length was almost $3, and I thought - I must be doing something wrong, Mel said it was like .25 or something like that. There wasn't anyone around to ask so I figured I'd wait until later.

I think there are 2" wide strips that are wood strips and not lath? Don't know, but I'm not buying it till I find the cheap stuff.

I have 2 4x4's with lath. I have one 4x4 with mason string. I like the look and usefulness of the string way more. I am about to start up 3 more boxes and I will definitely grid them with string. I probably spent $5 for years worth of grids.

Yeah, I like the string because I can still dump more MM on top of the bed after settling, spread it out, and then snap the strings to get the MM off them, easy peasy.

I'm pretty sure the wood lath at my local HD was out in the gardneing area and not in the building supply area. I looked at it but since mine are cinder block beds I haven't figured out how or even if I want to have a grid attached. Anyone with ideas how to do it with string? As in how to attach to blocks?

I needed to get my grid in quickly at the end of the day, so I used twine with a nail tied at each end stretched between the stone pavers I used for my box. Turned out that it looked pretty good and took very little time. I got a 50 ft. length of the twine they use at Lowes to secure a customer's purchase. I asked a service rep to help locate twine, and after a brief discussion he asked how much I wanted and cut it to length for me. Looks good, and even better, it was free!!!!!!!

Last year I used twine, and I attached it in two different ways: Screws, where I could. Drive in screw almost to the bottom, then tie off, screw in a little more. Then where I did not have wood available to screw into (long story), I used railroad spikes. These look like huge nails about 6" long. They are cheap and long enough that they won't come out of the MM easily once you push them in. Here is a picture from last year:

Hope this helps!

I am building new beds in my backyard last year. I want to do twine again, but I have told myself I am going to do one bed with lath just to see how I like it.

I read in Mel's book that it is not a square foot garden unless it has lath. Smile

So if you use twine, you have to go to some other forum because we're kicking you off here. rofl

Does it really say that? I don't remember seeing that. I was under the impression they used that lath for the grid and because it photographs well... I could be wrong of course. study

Actually, he mentions string, Venetian blind slats, and scrap wood as well. He says (somewhere near page 63) that blinds and lath are inexpensive. He is always trying to find ways to make it affordable for us, after all! Very Happy

I'm hoping all these new vegetables will restore a few brain cells. Smile

We had a customer in the store the other day asking if she could take the plastic straps that come around our lifts of lumber for her SFG. I thought that was a very creative idea.

I suggested a while back that Mel doens't like string because it doesn't photograph well. More and more folks are beginning to use string.

So where does that put those of us that don't fit either category??? I measure it out with lathe and plant and then remove it the same day. Razz Razz Razz We don't have a long enough season to plant a second crop and I really don't have use for the string once the plants are up.
