Attaching and Removing Grids

Almost ready to attach my grids to my boxes. Using redwood for the boxes and wood lath for the grids. Read that many take off the grids and store for the winter.

Question: What do you use to attach the wood lath? I was going to use screws but am concerned that by removing/replacing the screws, I will shorten the life of my redwood boxes or that the holes will get so big that the lath won't stay attached after a number of uses.

Honestly, I never thought it. I haven't had the problems you describe, but now that I think about it, you could be on to something.

Another option is to just lay the grid on the soil. This would only work if you fasten the grids at their intersections. I've used both methods. It just depends on what materials I have on hand when I need to make a grid.

i too made my grids out of lath and i have screwed them down to the box.
I used 1/2 inch wood screws and drill pilot holes all the way through the lath so as not to split or crack it and i also marked the grids on the underside so i knew which way they are supposed to face this way when you put them back on you will just be putting the screws back into the original holes.
I also used the screws at each intersection of the lath to make it a bit more sturdy and wind resistant (lol hurricane season in florida)

Lath is a pain to work with very flimsy and thin and breaks without much force but i think it makes the box look nice might try something lse for next year who knows. hope this helps
