Your favorite dried beans
I'm wanting to grow some beans this year for dried bean and I'm just wondering what varieties everyone has tried and really like.
Beans!
I've been a fan of pintos, black beans, Great Northerns, and Red Beans since I was a kid. Those 4 seem to be found in most all the "beans" recipes that I like.

Re: Your favorite dried beans
We love black beans. I make chili w/ them...add them to my taco meat. Black bean enchiladas. I think I use them a lot now because they are small and therefore more kid friendly.
Re: Your favorite dried beans
guess the range of total number of bean plants you need to go 1 lbs of beans?

Re: Your favorite dried beans
I use a lot of all that have been mentioned, but when it comes to home grown (farmers market home grown, not done it myself) I love cranberry.

So I guess your saying it's not worth growing your own dried beans?

Wow so if I want a pound of pinto beans I have to plant at least 25 plants? That doesn't seem worth it and I'd probably be better off using those squares for something else.
Re: Your favorite dried beans
titans01 the 25 plants are if have max production per plant.
on average you might 6-10 bean pods per plants 6 beans per pod 50-100 beans per oz
depending on variety 800-1600 beans per lbs.

beans
My fave is October (horticultural bean) I actually found seeds at the local farmer's Co-op yesterday.
Bean Seed from the cupboard.
Howdy:
Last year I had a few squares left open from from early planting so I went through my cupboard and took a few beans from each bag of dried beans and planted them. They all grew.
God Bless, Ward.

Good idea. Guess I never thought of that.
